GREER THE BETRAYER, SON OF NO MAN
Born somewhere in the Trackless Moors, Greer was raised by a nomadic tribe of thieves and cutthroats and built a modest reputation for himself as an efficient mercenary before he was cast out for displaying the one thing that carries no value among thieves: honor. Details are scarce since Greer himself refuses to divulge details of his notoriously sketchy past, but as the story goes, it involves Skorn, invalids, a broken contract with a high-born prince, and the redistribution of stolen goods among the denizens of a desperate village.
Branded “The Betrayer,” the name has stuck to Greer like a festering pimple, an unpleasant fact that has caused many broken alliances and made him a figure of obvious distrust. Nevertheless, Greer now wears his unwanted moniker as a badge, using it to remain aloof and alone, shielded from the heartache of having to form lasting friendships. He enjoys being the wildcard. Alas, remaining alone for long is not one of Greer's skills, contrary to his plans. He’s as easy to like as he is hard to trust. His natural charm and charisma help offset the obvious skepticism of his character and reputation, and he usually delivers, adhering to his own personal code of ethics. A code he never shares with anyone, adding to his inscrutable mystique.
His own experience with unfairness and inequity has given him an almost unhealthy passion for justice and he is a man in constant search of revenge – always looking to right a wrong, even if no wrong has occurred. He makes his living as a hired-blade, operating as a jack-of-all-trades for the most dubious of jobs. He might skim off the top or steal for himself, but only after the letter of the contract has been fulfilled. He will deliver as promised; anything extra, however, that belongs to him. After years of wandering in isolation, Greer believed he had possibly found some stability, camaraderie, and a path to some kind of redemption with the Blackbrand Mercenary Co., establishing himself as not only a top-earner, but as – ironically – a dependable, faithful, and loyal friend to his comrades.
There is one other tale that is sometimes whispered in beer halls and alleyways about Greer’s past, the veracity of which is impossible to pin down. It’s probably not worth even bringing up, but every so often, some reprobate in some dirty corner of some dank drinking hole makes mention of it when they see Greer, screaming the word “Betrayer!” at him. It involves a woman, of course. And another, angrier woman. And that woman’s angrier husband, along with stolen priceless gems and an ancient spellbook. And, if the rumors are to be believed, it mostly involves the Shenzu Raiders.
