War of the Gods

As the Age of Creation wore on and the celestials battled the demons, one of these divine angels would betray the gods. Asmodeus was the first of the archangels, their leader and the strongest among them. For millennia he had battled the demons and driven them before him. Many stories are told of why he would turn on the gods, but all agree that he would fall from grace and plunge the world into chaos.

Asmodeus would descend upon the Material Plane and slay each of the Primordials, creating the Elemental Planes from their bodies and ending the Age of Creation. Without the power of the Primordials' elements, the gods could no longer freely create, and without the light of the Fire Primordial, darkness fell upon the world.

Many celestials would fall alongside their leader, and many gods would fall in with his designs. Thus began the War of the Gods. An unknown number of Gods and races would be destroyed in the War, great deeds were performed, and cataclysmic battles raged.

After millennia, Asmodeus and his ilk would finally be defeated in a last battle. The Gods that remained on his side were locked away in the Outer Planes and his devils and fallen angels were cast down into the Nine Hells along with Asmodeus.

Following the War of the Gods and the defeat of Asmodeus, the Gods reached an agreement that they should all withdraw from the Material Plane and destroy its ties to the Outer Planes, lest their power destroy all of creation. While not all the gods agreed with this accord, some of the High Gods enforce it.

Scholars say the Divine Accord came into being to stop the cycle of retaliation between good and evil gods from destroying the mortal realm.
