The Drow
The Drow, or Nox Fae, are an Elven folk banished to live below the ground in the Underdark, cursed not to feel the light of the sun. The Drow of old were followers of the Fae Lord Shaytas who betrayed the other Fae. The lives of the Drow in their Underdark cities are defined by their place in the matriarchical hierarchy, being expected to carry out the will of their cruel gods.
Culture
The Drow live their lives in the shade of the Underdark. They have naturally adapted to it, able to see clearly in the dark. This has however left them vulnerable to the strong lights and the sun.
In the greatest of their subterranean stone-carved cities, magic lights are suspended in the cavern ceiling, imitating the starry night sky, while a massive white tree barren of leaves rises up against the cave ceiling, the spirit-tree of Shaytas.
Drow culture is strictly hierarchical and in most communities matriarchal. The highest of a Drow community is the Nox Matriarch, said to have a direct connection with their deity. Below the Matriarch are titles such as the Nox Maidens (followers and personal guards of the Matriarch), Nox Monk (male Drow swordsmen),…
The Drow follow three main Churches, locked in eternal rivalry for power. The Church of Lolth is the most powerful, exerting control over the Churches of Vhaerun and Eilistraê. Most Drow cities in the Underdark are controlled by the Church of Lolth. Some communities do find themself under the control of the Church of Vhaerun. Few communities are governed by the Church of Eilistraê, instead working within the others to guide Drow away from the Underdark. Each church has an associated Sect, consisting of its most devout and prime members. The Sect of the Nox is loyal to Lolth, the Sect of the Oriên to Vhaerun, and the Sect of the Ilunar to Eilistraê. The sects carry out the hidden and mysterious work of their deity.
The devout Drow await the coming of the Nox Asgyniad, the Coming of Night, when they believe the surface world will come to share the eternal twilight of their Underdark. Other Drow are however content to simply live their lives below in the Underdark. Some Drow however venture above, whether for their own freedom or for malice against the Asdari.
The Drow have mastered the Underdark, learning to use its beasts to their benefit.
Usual Drow garb includes dark colours and leathers with a white silk cape draped over. Silk worms are abundant in the Underdark.
History of the Drow in Asdar
The Drow are the descendants of a group of Fae that followed the Fae Lord Shaytas as he went with the other Fae Lords to Asdar to reconquer it from the Demonic Lords. In a pivotal battle, Lord Shaytas betrayed the other Fae Lords, switching sides to take power alongside the Demonic Lords. Most of his followers joined him in this betrayal. They won this battle but the Demonic Lords and Shaytas would in time be defeated. For their betrayal, Shaytas was hounded by the Fae Lords into the Underdark where his mortal body was killed and he became a great white Spirit-Tree barren of leaves. His followers were banished, forced to remain in the Underdark, where they would worship Shaytas as their Eternal King and his greatest followers as their gods.
