The Baatori

The Devils, called Baatori in their native Infernal language, are a lawful evil race of fiends native to the Nine Hells.

As strictly hierarchical beings, all devils have a rank in the order of devils and are in the service of an archdevil. While lawful and hierarchical, they are however immensely ambitious, always seeking ways to gain favour from those of higher rank or finding ways to weaken them in order to rise themself.

Though beings of malevolence, most devils will not attack on sight lest they have a justified reason to. Instead they prefer to ascertain whether they can extract anything useful from the mortals they meet, whether that is information or pacts. Never be sure of a still devil however, as they may rather kill a mortal than gain nothing from them.

All devils, while they have their own ambitions, are bound to serve the ambitions of those above them. As such they work to corrupt and tempt mortals, extract the power from their damned souls, and fight in the endless Blood War against the Demons.

True Names and Infernal Titles

All devils gain their True Name when created. The knowledge of this name can however grant other beings power over it. Leser devils of the lower ranks are only known by their True Name, granting other devils command of it. If a devil proves itself worthy, a Greater Devil can grant it a Common Name to use in order to hide its True Name. Most Devils prefer to use their Common Name or Infernal Title when dealing with others.

An Infernal Title is descriptive of a devil's deeds or powers. An Infernal Title is not simply a moniker, it is a boon, a second name bound to it, yet is not susceptible to the vulnerabilities of a True Name. In addition to being a powerful moniker, the Infernal Title grants the devil additional power inherent in the Title. An Infernal Title can only be granted by an Archdevil of higher rank than the devil, making it difficult to attain but a powerful reward to dangle before them.
