Spiritualism holds that when a person dies their soul goes to the Ethereal Plane and remains there, not passing on to any other plane or afterlife. Followers believe that these spirits may watch over their ancestors, taking part in their daily life. Some also believe that these spirits can in time come to inhabit other living or inanimate things, such as animals, trees, or even normal objects.

A follower of the faith is called a spiritualist.
