Making a PC

Class Changes

See HB Class Changes (2024) for details on homebrew changes to the 2024 classes.

Ability Scores: Randomised Point Buy.

When determining the ability scores of your character, you have a number of points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Cost table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 points. You cannot have an ability score that is higher or lower than the scores listed in the table below, before adding racial ability score modifiers.

The number of points you have to spend equal 20 + 3d6 (dropping the lowest). If you are unable to create the PC you want with the total you rolled, you can "buy" a reroll at the cost of -2 points from your rerolled total. You can do this multiple times, with the cost carrying over.

Level 1: One Free Feat

At level 1 you gain one free feat of your choice. You can choose any feat you wish, except one that is listed below. These are feats that are especially strong, and so must be gained from other sources.

Level 1 Free Feat Cannot Be...
  • Elven Accuracy

  • Great Weapon Master

  • Heavy Armor Master

  • Lucky

  • Medium Armor Master

  • Polearm Master

Note: If another feature (such as Variant Human race) grants you a feat at level 1, you can still take the feats above. You can also take these feats when gaining an ability score improvement.

IMPORTANT: When using the 2024 rules, you do not gain an additional feat at level 1 but gain it through your background. If you choose a background that does not grant a feat, you may choose an Origin feat for free. In general, it is better to choose a PHB2024 background.

Origin Feat: Any Feat

When choosing your background, you can replace the standard Origin Feat with any other Origin Feat.

Backgrounds

If it suits your PC, you can choose one of the backgrounds from Grim Hollow for your PC instead of the standard ones. These backgrounds have rank progression, meaning you get more out of your background as the story progresses.

Levels on new PCs

If you have to make a new PC, their level will be one below the second lowest in the party. This is to give it a small debuff, second lowest so that you don't spiral. The lower level PC will gain a level increase faster.
