Jay Cindersky

“How would you all like to cause mayhem without repercussions?” - Jay to Windmill Pixies, after being unpetrified

Jay is a member of the Grove’s Founder’s Circle, representing Chaos. Prolific in herbalism, she has founded Blue Phoenix, an apothecary specializing in poisons.

Biography

Jay was born to a peasant farmer, but sold at the age of four to the royal family of Adrela to be used as a body double to one of the princesses. Body doubles were called Phoenixes as they allowed the royal family to appear as if they were reborn after dying-- to Jay, it’s simply a nice way of saying she was a slave.

She was expected to serve the crown as a body double for her entire life, with no chance of leaving until death.

She was trained in some self defense, herbalism, and literacy to be passable as a princess when out in public. The kingdom fell on hard times and made terrible decisions, including heavy taxation in an attempt to keep the people docile.

These moves instead invited a rebellion. Jay was amongst the elite in this uprising, but suffered heavy losses in friends and fallen comrades. The horrors of the war atrocities haunted her, and she was hunted for standing up for freedom.

Age: “Good question. I don’t feel like doing math-- good day.”

Evading enemy pursuit, she was chased off a cliff by enemy forces and fell into a portal leading to Osterra. The Guild of the Black Sky found her and guided her to Nova Regnus. But she was not on board with the aggressive approach at expansion she witnessed from the Guild and was relieved to meet others of like mind at the Winter Council of 2020. Since joining The Grove, she has been relearning her craft with herbs and has founded the Blue Phoenix.

Personality

Jay is a firebrand and a rebel. She is loyal to just causes that avoid war, but she is not afraid to defend herself or others fiercely. She does not wish for power herself for fear of repeating mistakes made in her former Realm. She has a hard time with morality in regards to the ends justifying the mean or prioritizing the greater good; this is why she is reluctant to acquire power or position of leadership. She is simply happy being eyes and ears and throwing daggers at those who would harm her sisters.

With no home to return to, she has found refuge in the Grove. Her counsel is often unvarnished, direct, and concerned with protecting personal freedoms, especially those of others. Inviting the fury of Jay Cindersky is an unwise move. She is also a source of chaos and unpredictability during adventures.

Jay meticulously works to provide quality salves and poisons from herbs around the world of Osterra. As a merchant, her product is second-to-none on the market. Her catalogues and recipes have assisted many who seek to survive and thrive in a dangerous world.
