Currency
"Maple does this to participate in the ritual of economy- not that they understand it that well... hence why Maple and their coin are soon parted." - Maple
Osterra's economy runs on multiple currencies.
Getting Started
When coming through the Portal, new characters can visit a charitable Merchant. Merchants may offer Starting Gold in exchange for listening to how coin works in the Realm. Coin varies based on the event and Merchant availability, but you may see currencies the Realm has to offer.
Coming to events and getting involved is the most predictable way to earn currency, but the game is not designed around linear acquisition of coin.
Don't worry: Currency is optional at this LARP; several strong community members have not had much for years at a time and still have a great experience.
Coins
As of June 2025:
5 Silver Coins = 1 Gold Coin
1 Electrum (legacy aluminum coin) = 1 Gold Coin
There are two coins denominations in Osterra: Silver and Gold Coins. Typically, Osterran coin is small, metal, and pressed with an Osterran seal on the back. On the front, images vary but may depict Faction seals based on who minted them (such as those of the Guild of the Black Sky, The Grove, or The White Ravens) or ephemera from core Osterran events and history.
If a coin does not have a Silver or Gold color (such as colorful Electrum coins), it is treated as 1 Gold. In the past, Electrum was worth 10 gold, but since has alchemically been proven as... just colorful gold coins!
If you are interested in minting LARP Adventures coins, please reach out to the coin marshal of the Realm to learn our process! The current coin marshal is Maple.
Gems
Gems are potent stones that have a worth similar to coins, but also may harbor energy for special effects. Characters with Professions may desire these gems to empower their abilities. Once used, they are expended and returned to Organizers.
Gem Type | Tier | Approximate Value |
Tiny | 0 | 1 Silver piece |
Small | 1 | 1 Gold piece |
Medium | 2 | 2 Gold pieces |
Large | 3 | 3 Gold pieces |
Exquisite | 4 | 4 Gold pieces |
Extravagant | 5 | 5 Gold pieces |
Unlike coins, gems have a variety of appearances. A character in the Artificer Profession may be able to tell you what a gem is worth. Go see them at an event!
No external coins or gems are allowed to be introduced into the Game by anyone other than Organizers. Even if a donation or minting is accepted by Organizers, your character does not retain them. Please contact the coin marshal (above) for further details.
Land Game Currencies
Separate from the individual currencies above, Factions have access to Land Game currencies for use on the Osterran stage-- earned through their turns taken. For information on these currencies, such as Golden Dragons and Ore, please see Unit & Land Rules.
These currencies are meant to be separate, though for Golden Dragons (sometimes called Gold in Land Game contexts), there is a dynamic conversion rate between these and Gold coins. For up-to-date information, please consult the Cartographer (running the land game table) at an event.
Leaving the Game
LARP can be a transient hobby. That's completely okay! However, in the Spirit of the Rules, treasure is not meant to be bequeathed to other characters, Faction-mates, or the like, if you decide to leave the Game.
Instead, please return these treasures to a Knight, Noble, or Organizer if possible so it can be recirculated fairly. Merchants are also sworn to collect these coin to return directly to Organizers. Custom coins are expensive to make, and we appreciate you helping us to offer future treasure to our community.
