Story points (SP)
Balancing Uncommon and Rare rarities
All Classes, ancestries, heritages, backgrounds, feats and items have a rarity.
Most are ⬛Common, some are 🟧Uncommon and few are 🟦Rare. Normally you discuss with your GM to see if you are allowed to use them. In Domos, discussing this is difficult because we have multiple Gamemasters, and not every Gamemaster knows what the considerations and choices of the other Gamemasters are.
Because we do want to give you the option to use 🟧Uncommon and 🟦Rare options, we’re implementing: ‘Story Points' and backstory bundles. This lets us limit players in the use of the Uncommon and Rare options, and still lets you choose what you want.
Using Story Points
You can use Story points, abbreviated to SP, to gain access to 🟧Uncommon or 🟦Rare options at Character creation, level up, and purchasing items. The table below shows how many SP different options cost.
Every player gets 14 Story points at character creation.
SP cannot be earned, except for under specific circumstances.
Type | 🟧Uncommon | 🟦Rare |
|---|---|---|
Class, Item, Background, Heritage, Feat, Language, spell | 2 SP | 6 SP |
Ancestry | 4 SP | 8 SP |
Buying an item using SP means you’ll ‘unlock’ the rights to craft or buy it.
Finding 🟧Uncommon, 🟦Rare or even 🟪Unique items in sessions does not require you to use SP to use them.
For this cycle, the Kobold ancestry and the Dragonblood heritage are ⬛Common instead of 🟧Uncommon
Some options may be Uncommon or Rare in the world, but not in a certain place. What if you wanted a character that fits a certain vibe but you don’t have enough SP to do it?
Introducing Backstory Bundles! Here you can find a list of 🟧Uncommon and 🟦Rare options we’ve grouped together that we think fits a certain vibe. we think fit a certain vibe. Buying one of these bundles makes the rarity one degree more common than usual for everything in that list, for the purposes of unlocking it with SP.
So an 🟧uncommon option would become ⬛Common for you.
And a 🟦Rare option would become 🟧Uncommon for you.
We’ve done this since SP is pretty limited and we wanted to encourage themes for your character. That said, you are not required to pick any of the options. All of these choices are completely optional.
