Primordial Magic

Through study, memorization, and years of practice and effort, some individuals are able to learn the written and spoken language of the Firstborn. This language, known as Primordial is the archaic mimicry of True Names used by the Firstborn supposedly taught to them by the original Primordial Gods when they asked their children to sing the world into creation with them. It is a flawed work, but its power can’t be denied.

The words when spoken or etched are able to draw energy from the Aether itself, and pull from the original desires of the Creator itself. Thus they manifest reality based on each word spoken or written when combined with the mental image of what is desired. The most important aspect of this magic however is that it was created by the first Gods and neigh-perfect beings in the Firstborn. This means their written state and spoken word require absolute perfection in order to be properly utilized.

A single incorrect line drawn, or word slightly misspoken, leads to disaster as the spell instead draws energy from the Aether with no direction or control. This rips a rift in an instant instead, destroying anything in its space before resealing. As such users of Primordial Magic are well respected for the amount of effort, practice, study, and memorization required to perform even basic spellcraft in such a way even though technically anyone can learn to utilize such. Such is even more impressive when it can be utilized accurately under duress for combat.

Incantations

When weaving the spoken form of Primordial the user is able to draw forth aspects of reality through memorization and visualization. When perfectly pronounced, the Incantation will create what the speaker is focusing on. (ie. Speaking “Fire” while imagining a campfire forming, will create a controlled, small flame that will guarantee a steady flame. But by speaking the same word and imagining a bolt of flame launching at an enemy, the same will manifest instead.) Intention, emotion and visualization are as much a factor as perfect pronunciation.

The longer one's incantation, the more powerful the spell becomes in return for requiring magnitudes more focus and speech. Similarly, skilled practitioners are able to use fewer words for the same effect by focusing on the mental image and emotion of the spell instead. As one's skill grows they are able to even begin weaving multiple incantations together by using the same word with completely different mental images and meanings woven in with them.

Runes

Runic Magic allows the user to carve Primordial runes into an item or material effectively placing a spell in the rune itself for future usage. These runes have two states, one being runic circuits that trace down an object, each rune connecting in a straight line. The other is runic circles utilized in enchantment to permanently empower an item by constantly circulating energy through the runes in an endless loop.

A single rune can only cause a single effect connected to a Primordial word, and unlike with incantations which are molded by visualization at any time, runes are bound to what their creator intended upon being carved into a material. A rune is activated when aura, mana, or ethereal energy is inserted into it, causing it to trigger. This energy must be inserted at the correct location, or the rune will fail.

This is why runes when combined must be perfectly combined into the circuit, or the process will fail as the energy cannot properly transfer from one rune to the next. A line of runes is used for a single instant channeling, such as etching the runes for ‘heat' and ‘line’ down a rapiers' blade so that when the wielder channels their energy into it a beam of intense heat is fired in a line from its tip once.

On the other hand placing a runic circle on an item takes that same runic circuit and forms it into a circle. The smoother this circle the more reliable this permanent enchantment becomes. Such as placing a runic circle on an item that reads as ‘guide’ into ‘durability’ and ‘sharp' on the pommel of a sword causing it to permanently hold a razorlike edge, and be far more durable while increasing the accuracy of its swings and balance.

Finally single-use runes are often used in the way of etching the single rune into a cheap material such as clay or wood and sending a small burst of energy into it, activating it and destroying the weak medium in return for manifesting the spell effect. This can be done using paper as well, but is generally frowned upon as simple rain could ruin such a material. These are generally referred to as “Enchantment Orbs” and are sold fairly frequently on the market for a variety of effects, time and wear can deteriorate them however due to their cheap materials.

Alternatively doing the same but with durable materials such as granite, crystal, metals, or even diamonds in some cases will create a permanent and reliable method of casting the carves runes by keeping them on hand. A reliable and frequently used medium for runic casters.

Natural Magic users are capable of creating runes on the fly through other mediums such as ink, light, engraving the earth with magic and visualization, etc. This allows the user to avoid reliance on items in order to cast while guaranteeing the accuracy of each runic circuit for devastating effects.

Energy Orbs

Fueling magic is a difficult thing for most casters, and even aura users can often require energy to continue a fight. The solution to this issue was created by the Archmage Merlin in the year 1,321 AR through the usage of what he coined “Energy Orbs”. By utilizing a perfected sphere, and repeating the runes for ‘store' and ‘energy’ across the surface in rings of complex runic circles, an enchanter is able to pour their energy into the sphere. Based on the material used, only so much energy can be contained within it.

Weak materials such as clay or glass will barely hold any before shattering, whereas strong materials, especially diamond, could hold far more. Size is also a factor, as the largest single piece of this material, the more energy it can hold, though the slower the delay is on how much energy can be pulled from the runic circles at a time. Regardless of skill level, anyone trained in aura, mana or surface-level Primordial magic is able to make skin contact with an energy orb to infuse it with energy or draw energy from it.
