Background

The gate garrison at Saltmarsh is comprised of three guards, with two stationed near the gate itself, and the third assigned to patrol the ramparts. However, it is not uncommon to find the patrolling guard taking an occasional nap within one of the two gate towers.

These guards, on the verge of retirement, are seasoned individuals awaiting the end of their service. Saltmarsh's remote location and lack of recent conflicts have rendered the need for heightened vigilance unnecessary. Consequently, the guards have grown complacent and lackadaisical in their duties.

Due to the relative tranquility of Saltmarsh, there is a 25% chance that one or more guards may be under the influence of alcohol. Their lax demeanor and susceptibility to bribes make them easily swayed. While it is their obligation to record the comings and goings of individuals, as well as to prevent anyone bearing heavy weapons from entering the town, their commitment to such tasks can be compromised through bribery.

Other NPCs

There is a 10% chance that Eliander Fireborn and/or Kraddok Stonehorn will be present, making the rounds. If he is there the guards will be on high alert.

Smuggling?

In fact, smugglers affiliated with Gellan Primewater have successfully bribed the guards, resulting in contraband flowing freely into and out of Saltmarsh. This illicit arrangement has allowed unauthorized goods to evade inspection and facilitated the smooth operation of the smuggling enterprise.

The guards' lack of diligence and vulnerability to bribes have inadvertently undermined the town's security measures, presenting an opportunity for those with ulterior motives to exploit Saltmarsh's vulnerabilities.

Gate Dynamics

  • Olin’s drinking frequently draws Arlen’s ire, but the older captain has a soft spot for the disgraced veteran, often giving him one last chance to improve.

  • Teagan uses Arlen’s strictness and Olin’s antics to his advantage, deflecting attention from his smuggling activities with polished excuses and subtle manipulation.

  • Arlen, though sharp-eyed and disciplined, finds himself outnumbered in the battle against corruption, with few allies he can trust.
