Barracks & Jail of Saltmarsh
Perched on a low hill overlooking Saltmarsh, the Barracks & Jail serves as the town’s primary stronghold for law enforcement. While not a true fortress, its weathered stone walls, iron-reinforced gates, and looming watchtower make it a formidable presence. More than just a garrison, this structure functions as a fortification, jail, and barracks, ensuring the town’s safety from external and internal threats alike.
The watchtower keeps a vigilant eye over the Javan Bay, scanning for incoming ships, rising smoke from fires, or any signs of trouble from the Hool Marshes. Its position grants the guards an early warning system against both mundane and supernatural dangers.
Leadership & Command
The barracks operate under Kraddok Stonehorn, Master-at-Arms of Saltmarsh. A hardened enforcer with a rigid sense of duty, Kraddok ensures discipline among the guards and runs the jail with absolute authority. A former comrade of Eliander Fireborn, he tolerates no nonsense and ensures no prisoner leaves before their time is served.
Beneath Kraddok, Sergeant Thorne Caldwell leads the day-to-day operations, commanding the guards on patrol and ensuring order within the barracks. Gruff but fair, Thorne has earned the respect of both his men and the wary townsfolk.
At any given time, 2d4 guards, led by a veteran, are on duty within the barracks, maintaining order and responding to threats as needed.
The Jail
The cellar jail is one of the few underground structures in Saltmarsh, consisting of two primary sections:
General Holding Chamber – A secure space for common offenders—drunken fishers, tavern brawlers, and petty criminals. The chamber is locked with a DC 20 check and monitored regularly.
High-Security Cells – A side passage holds six isolated cells, each locked with DC 25 mechanisms. These cells are reserved for dangerous criminals, pirates, and fugitives.
Warded Cell – One of these cells is permanently warded against teleportation and divination, used for spellcasters or highly classified meetings.
Saltmarsh does not house long-term prisoners. Anyone sentenced to more than a year or hard labor is transferred to the heavily fortified prison in Seaton.
While many townsfolk respect the barracks’ role in keeping order, others see it as a place where old soldiers and troublesome guards are sent to finish their years in obscurity. Nonetheless, the Barracks & Jail of Saltmarsh remains a crucial bastion of law and order in a town constantly teetering on the edge of chaos.
