Economy

Fishing: The backbone of Saltmarsh’s economy, fishing supports most local families and provides the town’s primary source of income. Salted fish and other seafood products are exported throughout the Sheldomar Valley, sustaining the livelihoods of the Traditionalists.

Dwarven Mining Operation: Recently established by Manistrad Copperlocks and her team of dwarves, this mining venture focuses on extracting valuable minerals from the surrounding hills. While it promises economic growth and trade opportunities, it has sparked resentment among the Traditionalists, who see it as a threat to the town’s heritage.

Smuggling: Operating in the shadows, smuggling remains a lucrative but illicit trade. Many locals turn a blind eye to these activities, viewing them as a vital supplement to the town’s economy. Smugglers often align with the Traditionalists, opposing increased oversight from the crown and Loyalists.

Culture and Religion

Saltmarsh is a deeply spiritual community, with prominent places of worship including:

  • Temple of Procan: Dedicated to the tempestuous sea god.

  • Sea Grove of Obad-Hai: A sacred site for nature worship.

Keoland’s broader pantheon, including Heironeous, Ehlonna, and Xerbo, is also acknowledged.

Foreign Relations:

Seaton: Is the largest town near by. Saltmarsh harbors a quiet disdain for Seaton, which abandoned its fishing roots to become a military seaport under royal influence. Many in Saltmarsh, particularly Traditionalists, fear their town may face a similar transformation, losing its autonomy and identity to serve the crown’s ambitions.

Burle: A small military outpost located inland, Burle maintains a positive relationship with Saltmarsh. The outpost provides security against external threats, and its proximity fosters cooperative trade and mutual support, especially during times of crisis.

The Hold of the Sea Princes: While an official enemy of Keoland, the Hold of the Sea Princes maintains a neutral relationship with Saltmarsh due to clandestine smuggling operations. Many locals, including influential Traditionalists, benefit from this secret trade, ensuring an uneasy truce between the two despite their nations’ broader hostilities.
