As you draw closer, the great stone span of Sharkfin Bridge rises over the Kingfisher River. Its massive arches jut from the water like the fins of some ancient shark, the surface wide enough for two carts to pass side by side. Shops and stalls crowd along both edges of the bridge, awnings of sailcloth, the smell of fried fish and tar, and the noise of sailors and travelers alike. Beneath the clamor, you catch the sour reek of rotting fish from the shadows under the arches, where rough shacks cling to the riverbank below. Even at a glance, Sharkfin Bridge feels alive and not always in ways that welcome you.
