Location

Bale Keep stands on a rocky rise above the treacherous coast, surrounded by the misty expanse of the Hool Marsh to the north and the pounding sea of the Javan Bay to the south. Waves crash endlessly against the cliffs below as salt spray fills the air, and the wind carries the sharp taste of brine.

An overgrown trail winds up toward the keep. Its crumbling walls are streaked with moss and white salt, the towers scarred by a century of storms and neglect. Gulls fly overhead as the surf roars beneath you.

The air smells of brine and decay and as you approach, a chill runs down your spine. You can’t shake the feeling that you are not alone.

Crabs

  • Day: 1d4 small crabs tears apart a dead fish. One drags a silver locket through the sand.

  • Night: A swarm (2d6) crabs scatter before you in the surf.

Osprey (Eagle)

  • Day: An osprey dives and drops a writhing eel near the party, screeching territorially.

  • Night: An osprey circles overhead, warning of something predatory nearby.

Giant Osprey (Giant Eagle)

  • Day: A giant osprey watches from a cliffside perch, guarding a nest.

  • Night: A giant osprey lands heavily on the beach, injured by a spear.

  • Day: A giant crab is tangled in a fishing net, snapping defensively and missing a claw.

  • Night: 1d4+1 giant crabs bursts from the sand and surround you.

  • Night: Screams offshore reveal a merrow trying to drown a merfolk skirmisher.

Sea Hag

  • Day: An old woman collecting sea shells along the edge of the water, offers to sell some and shares some "secrets".

  • Night: A barnacled covered woman stands in the breaking shore with her hands raised calling out... “The sea keeps what the land forgets…”

  • Day: Smugglers unload crates from a skiff, freezing when spotted.

  • Night: Lanterns on small boats sway off the coast, perhaps smugglers or pirates.
