Alkhakh / Fae

"They steal cattle and babies... They steal milk... They love music, and steal away musicians... In fact they steal everything."

Terry Pratchett

Immortal cannibals, living by their own code of ethics. Mongolian.

Quick Look

Magic

  • Fae Magic involves forming contracts with ambient Spirits.

  • These contracts oftentimes involve the sacrifice/consumption of other Mortals.

  • Fae are obligated to avoid outright lies, as appearing untruthful may deter future contracts with their Spirits.

  • Long-lived or powerful Fae oftentimes carry their own 'courts' of loyal Spirits. Powerful enough, these 'courts' may give the impression of ethereal wings/auras.

The Fae are a race of unaging Mortals who fall under the influence of Tsenan Lai / Spring.

A singularly fickle and self-serving race: extreme caution is advisable when interacting with these creatures.

Most Fae have little concept of possession/identity, and as such have no issue murdering/thieving - so long as they leave 'equivalent' tokens to replace the lost.

Some time during the First Era, a precursor to the Fae race hunted a Sodatsu / Dryad precursor race to near-extinction. Xurhuan Zhi / Elysia intervened; granting these precursors her blessings in exchange for certain concessions.

As society developed throughout the Second Era, the solitary natures of the Fae began to work against them: unable to keep up with the rapid industrialism of Humans, nor the sheer longevity of Elves.

Society

While Fae society as a whole is fractured and complex, the vast majority of Fae groups/alliances can be categorized into one of two larger Courts.

  • The Seelie Court: Those Fae which exist outside of organized society - typically stalking the outskirts of poorer towns and subsisting off what they can steal.

  • The Unseelie Court: Those who have joined larger societies so as to avoid being hunted down - typically working odd jobs for sustenance.

Notes

  • As Fae carry their own 'courts' of Spirits, they oftentimes have issues entering into places with other Spiritual import.

    • Houses, homes, churches, etc.

    • To avoid their courts clashing with any resident Spirits, Fae are advised to leave their courts outside of any important thresholds.

  • During their First Era conflict with the Sodatsu / Dryad precursors, many mineral-based nature Spirits cursed the Fae race in retribution for the extermination of lithic Dryads.

    • Contact with any metal hurts the Fae, though iron especially dissolves Fae flesh on contact.

      • With advanced processing, however, materials such as steel take on new Spirits and as such may lose their anti-Fae properties.
