“Monet is God of the Rot, of all held beyond its expiration point, kept until it begins to mold and stink, sickening all around it. They embody the worst of Shadowfell, of the desire to hold on to what is no longer good or helpful, all for the sake of a long-spent memory, desecrated by its unnatural undeath.”

Overview

Profile

Monet, God of Memory, is a central god of Shadowfell. They embody memory, refusing to ever forget the past. In The Underdark, they are honored as The God of Storytelling, preserving history and culture through oral tradition, written word, and the arts. Like all deities, they embody their province in the extreme, and some fear that Monet's tight hold on the past prevents them from accepting the present.

Monet created the first of En's humanoids, the Shadar-kai, desiring the shadowy elves to keep the plane's history as it grew and changed, always preserving what had come before. This wish was shattered when Ember brought the sun, and new races forced the shadow dwellers into The Underdark. The civilizations of En's first people were lost, history destroyed, a fact Monet has never forgotten and, some say, never forgiven.

In places where Monet is worshipped prominently, some worship him as the God of Mourning in place of Reaper. As a god of mourning, Monet embodies keeping alive the memories of the lost, where Reaper embodies accepting the inevitability and necessity of death.

Depictions

Appearance

Monet is depicted in the form of a Shadar-kai, their proud creation. They are cast in a background of dark colors, often looking back over their shoulder to symbolize their focus on the past.

Holy Symbol

Followers of Monet traditionally use coins depicting symbols connected to the deity, such as a scroll, and instrument, or a simple painting. The Black Sun symbol is growing in prominence, symbolizing both a respect for Monet and a desire to reclaim lost history of En's first peoples.

Influences

Goals

Monet seeks to recover lost history, especially that of their Shadar-kai and the other first peoples of En. By nature, they are rarely an active god, but rumors say that an Underdark organization by the name of Black Sun is working to see their will done.

Divine Relationships

Monet despises Ember, seeing him as a selfish, world destroying force, willing to destroy anything and anyone for his own ends. This makes them a largely unpopular deity.

The Olympic Pantheon find Monet stuck in their ways and unwilling to change with the world. Respite and its deities are sympathetic to them and their loss, but feel Monet has not dealt with the matter productively. Reaper has a cordial relationship with them, although they disagree on many professional matters, namely Reaper's focus on change and moving on from the past versus Monet's focus on fiercely holding onto what once was. Some say the two's relationship runs deeper than friendship.

Worship

Commandments

Remembrance. Never forget what has come before you. Hold on to the lost and preserve the past.

Storytelling. It is not enough to remember what you have experienced, you must also share these experiences with others, that they will be passed on forevermore.

Festivals

Days of the Dark Sun. A Day of the Dark Sun is a day in which the warring moons Lios and Terberis pass over The Blue Sun, obscuring its light. Underdark astronomers sneak up to the surface to track the movements of these bodies closely, and when the time comes for the sun to darken, Underdark dwellers emerge in waves to enjoy a few moments of a fleeting dark day on the surface. These festivals are commemorated with great storytellers reciting tales of the first people and paying homage to Monet, that their history might be protected.

Followers

Typical Followers

Monet is a popular deity in The Underdarks, for both the spiteful who seek vengeance for what they feel they lost to Ember's Blue Sun, and the mournful who preserve the memory of what is no more.

They appeal to a similar audience outside The Underdarks, finding followers in those who wish to preserve the memories of those they have lost, from artists memorializing the dead through masterpieces to the vengeful or depressed unable to cope with grief and loss.

Due to their connection to The Underdarks and hatred of Ember, Monet is often considered a taboo god, with rarely a temple or even shrine to be found in a city. When they are publicly recognized, it is often in the form of a small shrine at a temple to Reaper.
