Duergar

Basic Information

Duergar are known for their expert crafting and rune carving abilities. So renowned for their skills are the first of the humanoid magic item crafters that, despite animosities between The Underdarks and the surface regions, Duergar smiths are sought out by the rich and powerful when they need an item of exceptional quality crafted.

Relations of other Races
Duergar share the Shadar-kai's disdain for the surface world and The Sun God, Ember. Where rebel factions gather to scheme, one is almost guaranteed to find a group of dwarven crafters making tools of war.

Like the other Underdark races, Duergar are looked upon with distrust. Even those who hire Duergar for crafts do so with great caution.

Physical Appearance
Dwarves are a stout folk, standing under 5 feet tall. Yet one would never mistake them for small folk, for they have the build of giants and sturdy craftsmen. Most male and many non-male dwarves grow beards, which are often seen as a sign of status.

Duergar are often shades of pale grey or purple, their hair white and eyes red or black.

Myths and Lore

Creation Myth
Dwarves were created by Giganta, the Goddess of Giants and Rune Carving, to inhabit the Material Plane. She first made the Duergar, to dwell on the dark plane and fill it with crafted wonders. Duergar were the first magic item crafters on The Material Plane, and their works were instrumental in the survival of En's first peoples in the new, harsh world.
