Campaign Questions

What's the campaign like for Kingslayer Chronicles?

Kingslayer Chronicles has an episodic structure where every game session is a self-contained story. While individual games may not be contiguous, players affect the world and larger story with their actions (and inactions) in each game session.

Much like an episodic television series, each game session have different plots set within the same setting—the Western Lands. You're not required to have been present for the first session or even last week's game, but continual playing may reveal overarching storylines. Your character may even build a legacy within the world.

Our structure makes it so you can join any Dungeon Master's table at any time, and still be part of the same world and story because our team of Dungeon Masters collaborate behind the scenes for a seamless experience.

What system is the campaign using?

The campaign is set in a homebrew world using the 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons ruleset by Wizards of the Coast with additional homebrew rules. See Survival Rules to learn more.

What does homebrew mean?

Homebrew is a fan term for game material made by players, rather than by an official or third-party publisher. In this case, the Western Lands is a setting that's been created by our Dungeon Masters.

Are you using the new 2024 Player's Handbook ruleset?

Yes, the Kingslayer Chronicles is using the 2024 ruleset. Please review the Character Creation Guidelines to learn more.

What's the game-play experience for Kingslayer Chronicles?

Due to the nature of the lore and setting, it is a survival-heavy game where an individual player's preparation can aid the whole party. Our Dungeon Masters will also provide opportunities for role-playing, combat, and dungeon-diving as it makes sense during the session.

Does the campaign give out magic items?

Yes, but it is limited as the campaign is magic item light. Magic items can be acquired in two ways:

  1. Purchasing from Magic Item Shop at the beginning of your game session.

  2. Random drop from our loot tables. The loot tables we use are based on official tables found in the Dungeon Master's Guide and other source-books for balance. At 3rd level, magic items are rare on our tables, but as leveling up happens more rare items can drop. You're also more likely to find magic items in treasure hoards than in regular encounters.

What are items worth when selling?

Transactions must done during a game session with a Kingslayer Dungeon Master. Items are worth 25% of their purchase price when selling. However, there's a chance the market may be in demand for your item and could sell for 50% of its purchase price. To determine if your item is currently in demand in the market, roll a straight d20 with no additional bonuses, skills, or spells to the roll.

The difficulty of the DC check depends on item rarity:

Common/Uncommon: Easy
Rare: Medium
Very Rare: Hard
Legendary: Extremely Difficult

If your roll does not meet the DC check then your item is not in demand and can only be sold at 25%. You may choose to sell your item anyway at 25% value, or attempt to sell again during another game session to see if the market changed to get 50% value.

This rule applies to any items when selling, including items found in treasure hoards and loot drops.

Could I trade items with another player?

You may trade with other players at your table during a game session with a Kingslayer Dungeon Master; however, players cannot trade outside of a game session.

What if there is specific content that bothers me in Dungeons & Dragons games?

We understand that everyone has different backgrounds and some types of content could have a negative impact. You can read in Code of Conduct for what's not tolerated in the campaign sessions. If there is anything you are specifically uncomfortable with, please contact the Dungeon Master when you sign up for a table. Our goal is to create enjoyable experiences for everyone as best we can.

What's the Kingslayer Chronicles game schedule?

Currently, there is no formal game schedule as the Dungeon Master team is all volunteers. So, games are scheduled when they are available, which may be on different days and varying re-occurrence.

If you wish to be notified when games are posted, set up your Discord notifications to receive pings from the "Dungeons and Dragons" role and click the checkbox to be alerted for new posts inside the notifications settings for the #ks-organized-dnd-tables channel.

I love DMing. Could I become a Dungeon Master for Kingslayer Chronicles?

We love your enthusiasm! Unfortunately, we are not bringing on more Dungeon Masters for the Kingslayer Chronicles campaign at this time. This could change if the player count grows, or if current Dungeon Masters drop from the roster. Either way, an announcement will be posted in the #dnd-annoucements channel if DM spots for the campaign open up.

Please know that this does not prevent you from DMing games at Kingslayer stores. If you'd like to host your own game (D&D or other TTRPGs), contact the manager of your nearest Kingslayer Games store on Discord to schedule a time. The more games, the merrier!

Registration Questions

How can I join a Kingslayer Chronicles game?

All game sessions are found in the Kingslayer Games Discord in the #ks-organized-dnd-tables channel. To join a game, review the Dungeon Master's table to see if there are open seats. If there are open seats, simply leave a comment in one of the posts that you'd like a seat. The Dungeon Master will add players in order by who commented first; however, priority will be given to brand-new players.

For more information, check out How to Join a Game.

Could I reserve a seat in advance?

No, seats cannot be reserved in advance before a table is posted by a Dungeon Master.

Once a table is posted a Dungeon Master our tables have a grace period and priority seating policy. Here's how it works:

  1. Comment your interest in joining the session in the Discord post.

  2. After 24 hours of the Dungeon Master posting the table, the Dungeon Master will review the comments and select players for the session based on the following priorities:

    1. New players to the campaign have first priority.

    2. Players who haven't played in 2 or more weeks have second priority.

    3. Players who played recently will fill the remaining open seats.

If the table fills up before you're selected, you'll be waitlisted. In addition, players who signed up for another game the same week go on the waitlist. Any waitlisted players will be added to the table if a seat opens up.

How many people can I register for a game session?

You can only register your seat and one other person per game session.

Please do not take advantage of this system by registering seats for people because you want to keep a consistent group. This takes away the opportunity from new and returning players to play, as well as players who may want to play with a different Dungeon Master. If we find this system being used to exclude players, this policy will be changed to registering only your seat.

Could I cancel if I'm not able to make the session anymore?

Of course! Life happens. We ask that you give the Dungeon Master notice of your cancellation at least 18 hours before the game starts. Dungeon Masters need time to prepare for the specific number of players attending and may need to adjust planned encounters. Also, this window allows players who missed out on the table to go in your place. So, please be considerate of not only the Dungeon Masters but other players who wish to play when you are canceling.

While there is no penalty for notifying after the 18-hour window, there is a penalty for no-shows that do not contact Dungeon Masters at all.

If you no-show three times without contacting the Dungeon Master, you will be suspended from participating in the Kingslayer Chronicles campaign for three months. If after a suspension you accrue an additional three no-shows without notice, you will be permanently banned from the campaign.

Note: It is ultimately the Dungeon Master's digression to add players to their tables. If you have a history of no-showing, dungeon masters will likely prioritize players who have a history of commitment.

Character Questions

What's allowed for my character?

Visit the Character Creation Guidelines page which covers the character creation guidelines for Kingslayer Chronicles games.

How does leveling work in Kingslayer Chronicles?

Kingslayer Chronicles is using a milestone-based system. Rather than using an individual XP tracker where players can fall behind or over-level, all Kingslayer players are always at the same level.

So, players must complete expeditions (game sessions) to contribute towards the milestone. The more expeditions completed, the quicker the milestone will be reached and then all players level up.

Hint: The milestones are tied to the threat level of the surrounding mists.

May I bring a backup character if my character dies during the game session?

Once your character dies no new characters can replace them for that same session; however, you are welcome to hang out for the remainder of your session and make a new character to use for your next game.

May I have multiple characters? / Could I create a new character?

You can have only one active character for all your game sessions; however, we understand that characters sometimes don't work out. So, characters can be retired, and you can create a new character that has been newly inducted into the Mist Watch.

How do I retire a character?

When you think it's time to retire your character, simply create a post in the #watcher-reports channel in the Kingslayer Games Discord using the following instructions:

For the post title: [Character Name] Retirement Notice

For the post content:

Retired Watcher: [Character Name]
Player: [Player Name]
Are the Dungeon Masters allowed to use your character as a potential NPC in future game sessions? [Yes/No]

I hereby announce the official retirement of [Character Name] from the Mist Watch.

  • You're welcome to add additional descriptions of your character's accomplishments or in-world reasons why this character is retiring. This is especially helpful for the Dungeon Masters if you are allowing the use of the character as an NPC.

After you've filled out the content tag the post using the "retirement" tag, and then submit the post.

Character retirements are permanent. Once you retire a character, you cannot bring the character back out of retirement.

Could I give all my stuff to my new character if my character dies or if I retire my character?

No, all the items and gold that the retired character had go with that character. It cannot be transferred to your new character.

What if I want to respec my character into a new class?

Let's say you've played your first couple of sessions and love your character story but aren't enjoying the gameplay. We can fix that with a respec ("re-specialization"). This does come with a cost, so do not make this choice lightly. When respecing a character, players can only change their class and reassign their current ability scores. To change anything other than current ability score assignments and class, the character must be retired and the player must make a new character.

To respec your character, please do all of the following:

  1. Talk with a DM: Any of the Kingslayer Chronicles Dungeon Masters can be your guide to this process!

  2. Respec between sessions: You cannot show up to a session, see the group dynamic, and decide on the fly to change your class.

  3. Write a Watcher Report: Write a few sentences describing what your character does between sessions telling the story of the respec. Use the template below.

  4. Pony Up Folks: Your character must pay 1000 gp per character level of respec. This covers the Mist Watch training fees.

Character Re-training Template

Post Title: [Character Name] Re-Training

Post Content:

  • Watcher Name: [Character Name]

  • Player Name: [Player Name]

  • Previous Class: [Class and subclass]

  • How many levels are you respeccing? [Number of Levels]

    • Ex) How many levels are you respeccing? 3 levels

  • What class(es) are you respeccing into? [List class for each level]

    • Ex) 1st Level - Twilight Domain Cleric, 2nd Level - Cleric, 3rd Level - Cleric

  • Brief description telling the story of the respec. Minimum of 30 words.

A character can only be respecced ONCE. If, down the road, a player decides to change again, they will have to retire the respecced character and create a new one.
