Atota's Wheel

In the beginning, the great dragon Atota, radiant with love and hope, laid the cosmic eggs from which hatched the twins, Soldin and Selindra. The love of Atota shone so brilliantly within them that Soldin and Selindra transformed into the sun and moon, their luminous forms reflecting the boundless light of Atota’s heart.

The twins, however, grew lonely in their celestial orbits, for there were none to bask in their glow. Seeing their children’s sorrow, Atota, in their infinite compassion, laid a new clutch of eggs. From these emerged four mighty dragons, each bestowed with dominion over the elements: Fyrnax the flame, Terram the earth, Undiriel the sea, and Aerindor the storm. With their elemental powers, these four shaped a world, crafting land, sea, and sky, upon which Soldin and Selindra could cast their light.

Yet, the world, despite its grandeur, felt barren and devoid of meaning to the elemental dragons. Perceiving this emptiness, Atota laid another clutch, giving birth to Nathe and Fanerys, the dragons of flora and fauna. From their breath sprang forth lush forests and diverse creatures, bringing vibrancy and purpose to the world, and forming a harmonious realm for Sol and Sel to illuminate.

For a time, peace and beauty reigned, with the children of Nathe and Fanerys flourishing under the twins’ wings. However, as the ages turned, these immortal beings began to lose their way. The ceaseless passage of eons drove them to madness, leading to strife and discord among them. Atota, witnessing their suffering, realized that eternal life had become a curse rather than a blessing.

In a moment of profound sacrifice, Atota tore off one of their wings, transforming into two beings: Ato and Ota. This act severed the immortality of the children, bringing forth the cycles of life and death. Ato became the breath of new life, while Ota ushered souls into an eternal slumber beneath their protective wing, ending the children’s torment and granting them peace.

Thus, the eternal cycle of Atota’s Wheel began. As old souls found rest under Ota’s care, Ato breathed new souls into the world, ensuring a continuous dance of life and death. In this way, balance was restored.

With the power of Atota now divided, Ato and Ota entrusted the new world and all its creatures to the stewardship of Atota’s brood. Under the guardianship of Soldin, Selindra, Fyrnax, Terram, Undiriel, Aerindor, Nathe, and Fanerys, the world thrived. Thus, the legacy of Atota’s love and sacrifice lived on, woven into the very fabric of existence.

This myth was recorded by the great bard of old, Hansi Kers.

The Great Dragon

These two deities preside over Atota's Wheel, the cycle of life and death. Though they are two, religious texts refer to Ato and Ota as the Great Dragon in remembrance of Atota's sundering. There are no records of mortals meeting the Great Dragon, but spoken legends have been passed down of their temperaments and appearances. It is said that they share a single pair of wings from their original form—Atota. So, in paintings and sculptures, Ato and Ota are always positioned beside or facing each other to emphasize the image of the single pair of wings coming together.

The Great Dragon, while revered, has few followers as religious texts make it clear that their power and authority were passed onto Atota's children.

Ato the Alpha

Ato is a benevolent deity whose presence brings forth the flourishing vitality of life and new beginnings. Their scales shimmer like sunlight dancing on the surface of a tranquil pond. Ato's left wing, fine and delicate like a newborn, glistens with dewdrops. As the embodiment of life itself, they inspire reverence and awe among their followers, who seek their guidance in nurturing and preserving the delicate balance of existence. From the humblest of creatures to the grandest of forests, all find solace in Ato's gentle embrace.

  • Pronunciation: Ah-toe

  • Domains: Life, Grave

  • Symbol: Left dragon wing with an "A" engraved into it

Ota the Omega

The dragon god of death, decay, and endings, Ota, is an imposing dragon woven from shadows, with scales that resemble dark obsidian and the quiet depth of night. Their presence is both somber and serene, with eyes that glow like dim embers. Ota's right wing is tattered, and their breath brings the chill of the grave. Ota ushers souls to their eternal rest underneath their wing, teaching followers to respect the natural end of life, honor the deceased, and find peace in the cycle of existence.

  • Pronunciation: Oh-tah

  • Domains: Death, Grave

  • Symbol: Right dragon wing with an "O" engraved into it

There are conflicting accounts of Atota's Wheel regarding Ota in particular. Some records depict Ota punishing the wicked children by eating their souls instead of ushering them under their wing. Then, the wicked souls eaten became Ota's emissaries to consume other evil souls. More records depict Ota as a spiteful, jealous sister of Ato. Her singular goal is to tarnish everything good that Ato creates, and is believed to be the source of the children's madness in these accounts. These iterations of Ota are often worshiped by necromancers and others who wish to manipulate life after death.
