Description
See
Scalemire Fen is a dark, foreboding swamp. The sky is often obscured by thick, gray clouds, casting a perpetual gloom over the land. The waters are murky and covered with algae, giving them a greenish-brown tint. Gnarled, ancient trees with twisted roots rise from the swamp, their branches draped with hanging moss that sways gently in the humid air. Patches of vibrant but sinister-looking mushrooms and bioluminescent fungi dot the landscape, casting an eerie glow at night. Ruined stone structures, remnants of an ancient civilization, poke out of the water, providing perches for the swamp's denizens.
Smell
The air is thick with the scent of decay and rot, a pungent mix of decomposing vegetation and stagnant water. There's a hint of sulfur, likely from hidden geothermal vents, and the occasional waft of briny seaweed carried in from the marshes. The smell of wet earth and mold permeates everything, mingling with the faint aroma of damp wood and the musky odor of the creatures that inhabit the swamp.
Hear
The swamp is alive with sound. The constant croaking of frogs and the chirping of insects create a continuous, rhythmic background noise. The water laps gently against tree roots and ruins, sometimes splashing as something unseen moves through it. Birds call out with eerie, haunting cries from the treetops, while the occasional roar of Murkclaw, the swamp dragon, echoes through the fen, sending flocks of startled birds into the air. The rustling of leaves and the occasional snapping of twigs suggest the movement of hidden creatures, possibly kobolds on patrol.
Climate
Scalemire Fen is perpetually warm and humid, with temperatures rarely dropping below 70°F (21°C). The air is thick and heavy, making it feel warmer than it is. Rain is frequent, often coming in sudden, intense downpours that leave the swamp even more waterlogged. Mist and fog are common, especially in the early mornings and late evenings, adding to the swamp's eerie atmosphere. Despite the frequent rain, the air feels stagnant and still, with only the faintest of breezes stirring the fetid air.
History
Not much is known at the moment about Scalemire Fen's history, but the Mist Watch has found out that Murkclaw's arrival in the Fen promoted the kobolds of the area from simple citizens of the swamp to it's top dog.
