General Campaign Info

THE CAMPAIGN PREMISE

All new characters are the newest members of the The Mist Watch, the organization commissioning brave souls to venture into the Wilds to gather resources and create safe havens so the people of Mistwood Lake can survive.

ONE ACTIVE CHARACTER: Players may only have one active character at any given time. If you have further questions about characters and character changes, please review our FAQs.

Be sure to read through:

  • "Step One: Character Creation"

  • "Step Two: Preparation for your First Session" at the bottom of the page.

Paper or Digital Character Sheet? Is DND Beyond Available?

You are welcome to use either paper or digital sheets to track your character. In addition, you may use your personal DND Beyond purchased content to manage your character. Kingslayer Chronicles does not have a campaign on DND Beyond. As long as you get your character sheet approved before your first session, we don't have a preference on how you manage your character.

Step One: Character Creation

1⃣Character Level

Please make your character at 6th level.

2⃣Character Stats

Character stats can be generated using either the standard array or the 27-point buy system.

Health Stats

Take max health for your first level, and subsequent levels take the average. Do not roll dice.

3⃣Character Options

Please use the 2024 Player's Handbook to build your character:

  • Species

  • Backgrounds

  • Classes

  • Spells

  • Feats

  • Items, etc.

For example, if your character is a human wizard, you must use the human species and the wizard class from the 2024 Player's Handbook.

Clerics: View the Deities page to select a deity that aligns with your preferred domain.

What if my preferred species or sub-class hasn't been updated to the 2024 rules?

In this case, you may use species or sub-classes from the approved column list below:

Approved Content for Campaign Use

Not Approved Content for Campaign Use

2014 species or sub-classes not yet updated to 2024:

  • Bigby Presents: Glory of Giants

  • Elemental Evil Player's Companion

  • Fizban's Treasury of Dragons

  • Locathah Rising

  • Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse

  • Sword Coast's Adventurer's Guide

  • Tasha's Cauldron of Everything (except no Custom Lineage)

  • Xanathar's Guide to Everything

The Artificer class may be used since it's available in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything and has not yet been updated to the 2024 rules.

No 2014 species or sub-classes that have been published in the 2024 Player's Handbook.

No 2014 backgrounds, items, feats, or spells.

No Custom Lineage species from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.

Source books that are not listed in the approved column cannot be used for character creation, such as:

  • Official 5th edition books

  • Unearthed Arcana

  • Third-party source books (i.e., MCDM)

  • Homebrew

Example: "Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos" or "Volo's Guide to Monsters" are NOT available for character creation because they're not included in the approved column.

4⃣Starting Equipment

New characters begin with level 1 starting equipment and may use their starting currency to purchase additional equipment from the 2024 Player's Handbook and our Magic Item Shop.

How much currency do I start with?

Begin with your background's starting gold, and then add 600 gold to that starting gold number.

5⃣ When considering your background and backstory...

All characters are from Mistwood Lake, and it is only recently that citizens are allowed outside of the safety of the city's walls. So when considering backgrounds such as the Guide, the Sailor, or the Wayfarer think in the context of someone living within a walled city most of their life.

Use 2024 backgrounds only. Skip Ability Score Increases from 2014 Species.

All characters must use 2024 backgrounds regardless of species because ability score increases come from backgrounds now.

If you wish to create a custom background, see the tab "Creating a Custom Background" at the top of the page.

Step Two: Preparation for your First Session

First: Get Your Character Approved

Whether you decide to use a digital or physical character sheet, your character must be approved by a Kingslayer Dungeon Master before your first session.

Send the Dungeon Master a message in the game post so they can review it before game day.

Second: Fill out our Character Survey

This survey helps our Dungeon Masters keep track of all active characters in our campaign.
