Description
The Night of Crimson Tears was one of the most harrowing and significant nights in Ederian history, marked by the betrayal and decimation of House Falkrest. Over the course of a single, blood-drenched evening, 22 members of the house, including the Lord Paramount, his kin, and even several infants in their cribs, were slaughtered in Skyhaven. The massacre was orchestrated by King Alistair Draven, a ruler descending into madness and consumed by dark ambitions. Their life energy was harvested in a necromantic ritual that fueled Draven’s ascension to lichdom.
This heinous act stemmed from Alistair's grief and paranoia. Only a few months prior, his beloved daughter and named heir was assassinated (More info in The Gang's Timeline) under mysterious circumstances. Her death shattered him, leaving him feeling betrayed and alone. Desperate to seize control and eliminate vulnerability, he turned fully to his necrotic magic, embracing the path of lichdom. His ultimate goal was to replace the living subjects of his kingdom with undead thralls, bound to his eternal will.
Alistair viewed House Falkrest as the sole obstacle to his plans. Just a decade earlier, he had elevated them to nobility and made Skyhaven a hold capital in recognition of their heroic deeds during the Calamity of Broken Dawn—a catastrophic event that nearly ended the kingdom. The Falkrests’ influence and military might, combined with their popularity among the people, made them a formidable threat to Alistair’s fragile grip on power.
Believing their loyalty compromised and fearing they would rally the kingdom against him, Alistair orchestrated their annihilation to clear his path. Yet amid the carnage, Elendara the Usurper, Falkrest narrowly escaped thanks to the intervention of Raynere, a mysterious bronze dragonborn adventurer. His arrival seemed almost preordained, as he had no known ties to the Falkrests but appeared at precisely the right moment. Together, they fled with Elendara’s two surviving children, Edemere and Talon, ensuring the family’s legacy endured despite the devastation.
This act of betrayal and destruction ignited the flames of the Survivors’ Rebellion, a movement that would ultimately topple Alistair Draven and bring his reign of terror to an end. His ambition to transform Ederia into a kingdom of the undead was foiled, but the scars of that fateful night would linger in the land's history forever.

Significance
The Night of Crimson Tears became the catalyst for The Survivors’ Rebellion, led by Elendara. Calling upon old alliances and half the noble houses of Ederia, she rallied a massive force to overthrow Alistair Draven. This rebellion culminated in the king’s death and the destruction of his lich form, restoring order to the Six Kingdoms of Ederia. Elendara’s leadership in this rebellion not only toppled a tyrant but also prevented the realm from descending into further chaos.
This tragedy also marked a turning point for Elendara herself, transforming her into a pragmatic, introspective ruler. The rebellion brought about an unexpected period of stability, initiating the longest era of Ederian peace, spanning 70 years.
Aftermath
The effects of the Night of Crimson Tears rippled across Ederia, both in its political landscape and its collective memory:
House Falkrest’s Reconstruction: Raynere, the bronze dragonborn who saved Elendara and her children, was formally adopted into the family. Elendara made him Lord of Skyhaven, entrusting him with its defense and legacy as her eldest son prepared for kingship.
Talon’s Path: The trauma of that night profoundly shaped Talon Falkrest. While his brother, Edemere, took on the crown and leadership of Ederia, Talon embraced a life of adventure, seeking solace in exploration and the pursuit of meaning beyond his family’s tragic history.
Ederian Unity: The rebellion forged stronger bonds among the noble houses who sided with Elendara, fostering a fragile but enduring peace. The event became a solemn reminder of the cost of power and the resilience required to preserve the realm.
