Bartolomé "Barty" Bahamnode | Phil

Bartolomé "Barty" Bahamonde is the illegitimate son of Marquis Landon Bahamonde of the Erebos system. To conceal the affair and his son's existence, the Marquis paid off Bahamonde's mother. Following her death, just after Bartolomé turned 18, he began extorting the Marquis for continued payments in exchange for his silence. Gradually, he assumed a more public identity as "Barty" Bahamonde, carefully cultivating a reputation as a charming dilettante while operating in the higher echelons of society. The Marquis, focused on his greater ambitions, accepted this arrangement as long as Barty remained discreet.

Barty's primary occupation is as a partner in an exclusive safari business with his best friend Cecil Braithwaite, a renowned big game hunter. They cater to the sector's elite, with Barty handling the logistics, transportation, and social aspects while Cecil manages the actual hunting expeditions. While their wealthy clients are out hunting with Cecil, Barty indulges his true passion: archaeology. His archaeological pursuits have given him unique insights into the history of various worlds, including his home system of Erebos.
Several years ago, during one of his archaeological expeditions, Barty uncovered evidence suggesting a disturbing truth about Erebos's remarkable technological advancement. The system's transformation from Tech Level 9 to 13 under Marquis Bahamonde's leadership wasn't solely due to brilliant leadership and innovation. Barty discovered hints of recovered ancient technology, possibly illegally acquired and reverse-engineered, which had helped fuel this rapid progress.

This discovery caught the attention of "The Rightful Succession" - a secretive coalition of minor nobles who had been investigating various matters across the sector. They approached Barty, seeing his unique position as both an illegitimate son and an amateur archaeologist as valuable to their cause. When he refused to help expose the secrets behind Erebos's technological leap, they became his enemies.

During this time he was organizing Safaris and during one of those he met Pallas. The two hit it off and Barty extended an offer to him, if he wanted he could join the team and fly on the XXX.

The Rightful Succession's opportunity came when the Marquis was occupied with overseeing a major technological initiative in another part of the system. The conspiracy forced Barty into taking a prominent political position, using him as their puppet while threatening to expose both his illegitimacy and the truth about how House Bahamonde had achieved its technological miracle.

During this period, Barty found himself regularly crossing paths with Lord Marcus Blackwood, a member of the Rightful Succession who had opposed using blackmail to control Barty, preferring more direct methods. Their encounters in political circles became increasingly hostile, with Blackwood viewing Barty as both a threat and an insult to proper noble governance.

While at a secretive meeting with the some shady business people on Nyx to gather evidence against the conspiracy, all present came under attack by a third party. In the chaos Barty escaped and met Plystra, one of the members of the anonymous party he had met with. Plystra was wounded and Barty cut off from his usual contacts and resources. They spent several days hiding from members of the Null Syndicate, paid by Jasper Ochua to hunt down the allies of the Qeen of Diamonds of which he considered Plystra to be one.

After escaping Nyx together with Plystra he was so impressed with the womens performance he offered her a place on his ship.

When Barty eventually returned with the evidence of the conspiracy's broader plans and chose to expose part of their operation, Blackwood lost significant political capital. In retaliation, the conspiracy revealed Barty's true identity to the public. While this forced him to step down from his political position and damaged his social standing, it ironically gave him some protection - they could no longer threaten to expose what was already known, and he'd managed to keep the evidence about the Marquis's technological acquisitions from coming to light.

The scandal has left Barty in an interesting position. While his social standing has taken a hit, he's not completely ruined. Some admire the political acumen he displayed while in office, while others are intrigued by his mysterious background. The Marquis still maintains their arrangement, partly out of gratitude for Barty's discretion and partly because Barty's archaeological discoveries have given him leverage of his own.

Now Barty has returned to his safari business with Cecil, though with a keener eye for both archaeological discoveries and political intrigue. His experiences have left him with useful skills and dangerous enemies, particularly Lord Blackwood, who maintains a very public rivalry with Barty, using his remaining influence to cause problems for the safari business while looking for opportunities to finish what the conspiracy started.

"My dear fellow, one simply doesn't rush these things... unless of course there's a decent vintage involved."

"I assure you, I find manual labor absolutely fascinating... from a safe distance, naturally."

(When faced with danger) "Oh bother... Cecil, be a good chap and sort this out, would you? I've just had these boots polished."

(Trying too hard to sound sophisticated) "As I always say - though perhaps I've never said it before - the key to high society is to look perpetually amused while understanding absolutely nothing."

(When his kind nature breaks through) "Oh, dash it all... sighs and rolls up expensive sleeves. Let me help with that."

(Attempting to deflect attention) "My background? Oh, frightfully boring. Now, have you heard about Cecil's latest expedition? Far more entertaining, I assure you."

(When caught doing something noble) "Well... straightens jacket uncomfortably one can't always avoid doing the right thing, no matter how unfashionable it might be."
