Alignment is a combination of two factors: one identifies morality (good, evil, or neutral), and the other describes attitudes toward order (lawful, chaotic, or neutral). These factors allow for nine possible combinations.

Alignment is not inherent to a creature, but roughly describes how it is perceived by the majority of the characters of the world. A creature's alignment can change over time if the manner in which they are perceived changes.

Lawful Good

Lawful good creatures try to do the right thing as expected by society. However, lawful good characters will often regret taking any action they fear would violate their code, even if they recognize such action as being good A lawful good character hates to see the guilty go unpunished.

Neutral Good

Chaotic Good

Chaotic good creatures try to act as their conscience directs, with little regard for what others expect. Chaotic good characters usually intend to do the right thing, but their methods are generally personal and often out of sync with the rest of society. They place a high value on personal freedom, not one for themselves but for others as well.

Lawful Neutral

Lawful neutral individuals try to act in accordance with law, tradition, or personal codes. They believe in following laws and rules for the sake of order and stability. They do not necessarily prioritise their own desires over the greater good.

True Neutral

True Neutral is the alignment of those who prefer to steer clear of moral questions and don’t take sides, doing what seems best at the time. Most neutral characters exhibit a lack of conviction or bias rather than a commitment to neutrality. Such a character thinks of good as better than evil-after all, they would rather have good neighbors and rulers than evil ones. Still, they're not personally committed to upholding good in any abstract or universal way.

Chaotic Neutral

Chaotic neutral creatures follow their whims, holding their personal freedom above all else. Although chaotic neutral characters promote the ideals of freedom, it is their own freedom that comes first; good and evil come second to their need to be free.

Lawful Evil

Lawful evil creatures methodically take what they want, within the limits of a code of tradition, loyalty, or order. They play by the rules but without mercy or compassion. They are comfortable in a hierarchy and would like to rule, but are willing to serve. They condemn others not according to their actions but according to race, religion, homeland, or social rank.

Neutral Evil

Neutral evil is the alignment of those who do whatever they can get away with, without compassion or qualms. A neutral evil character has no compunctions about harming others to get what they want, but neither will they go out of their way to cause carnage or mayhem when they see no direct benefit for themselves.

Chaotic Evil

Chaotic evil creatures act with arbitrary violence, spurred by their greed, hatred, or bloodlust. They set a high value on personal freedom, but do not have much regard for the lives or freedom of other people. Chaotic evil characters do not work well in groups because they resent being given orders and usually do not behave themselves unless there is no alternative.
