THE RIM

The Rim marks the boundary between Fortune’s Rest and the Sunhallow.

This district serves as the last stop for divers before their descent: a hub of merchants, healers, and teahouses eager to part adventurers from their coin. Ramshackle stalls offer everything from dungeon maps (questionable in accuracy) to enchanted talismans of dubious origin.

Shrines to the Goddesses stand scattered among the bustle, their keepers offering hurried blessings in exchange for coin. This is also where the city’s busiest bounty boards stand, touting a mix of job postings, recruitments, and desperate calls for help.

No one lingers at the Rim for long. It’s a place of fleeting deals and hurried goodbyes, for an unspoken truth festers beneath the bustle: many who pass through will never return.

THE PADDIES

The Paddies stretch across the waters encircling Fortune’s Rest, a sprawling network of floating platforms and interconnected boat houses.

Named for their resemblance to terraced rice fields, the Paddies are the city’s primary source of aquaculture, bustling with the daily rhythms of fishing, farming, and trade. Nets hang from the edges of the platforms, brimming with glimmering fish, while shallow pools built into the wood house shrimp, mussels, and other ocean delicacies.

The platforms are also home to countless small restaurants and eateries, offering the freshest catches to those who can stomach the ever-present scent of fish and brine.

Life here is backbreaking work. Long hours hauling nets, tending to aquaculture, and balancing on the swaying platforms leave little time for rest. Yet, the people endure, driven by resilience and the rhythm of the tides that sustain Fortune’s Rest.

THE CANOPY

The Canopy is the bustling market district of Fortune’s Rest, its name drawn from the overlapping tarps and awnings that create a colorful "canopy" overhead. Vibrant and chaotic, the district never sleeps, catering to the city’s diverse inhabitants, both nocturnal and diurnal.

Halflings peddle pies made from the latest monsters caught by the Gilders, while dark elf artisans carve weapons from the creatures' bones. Even the proudest sun elf might find themselves scrambling out of bed at midnight to claim a blade from the legendary Ebonbone Atelier.

Merchants peddle everything from Sunhallow relics to rare spices. The air hums with the energy of trade—the clash of voices haggling, bursts of laughter, and the occasional heated dispute. For those with coin to spare, the Canopy offers anything under the Sun—as long as the price is right.

THE ALCOVES

Carved deep into the mountain beneath Fortune’s Rest, the Alcove is a sprawling network of tunnels and chambers, home to divers, merchants, and others who have found themselves tethered to the city.

Living quarters are little more than carved niches in the stone, often shared by several divers at once. Communal spaces provide what comfort they can—modest kitchens, shrines to the goddesses, and gathering spots where residents exchange stories, share meals, and pass down hard-earned knowledge. The air carries the mingled scents of damp stone, cooking fires, and the ever-present tang of moss.

Though space is scarce and comforts are few, the Alcove thrives on a fierce sense of community. Residents of each "neighborhood" watch out for one another, even if they rarely admit it, sharing resources and offering aid where they can. Bonds formed here run deep, forged in the shared struggle of life on the edge.

THE PYRE

The Pyre is the searing heart of Fortune’s Rest, alive with the relentless rhythm of forges and the hum of invention. Candles burn both ends in countless workshops and laboratories, where blacksmiths, enchanters, and scientists work tirelessly to arm the city and unravel the mysteries of the Sunhallow.

While the Pyre is renowned for its master artisans, it is also home to a burgeoning culture of discovery. Scientists and scholars labor in makeshift labs to study relics, dungeon materials, and the strange energies that emanate from the depths. Unstable experiments, wayward enchantments, and miscalculated explosions are almost a daily occurrence.

A ramshackle library stands at the edge of the district, its shelves lined with hastily scribbled scrolls and half-finished diagrams. Here, scholars plead with divers to partake in studies and share discoveries, often in vain; more than one frustrated scribe has abandoned their quill to join the descent themselves.
