Pergrad Longfellow

One of the minor NPCs from the adventure "The Dragon's Hall", living in Shepshed.

"I don’t know what all the fuss is about. We’ve had storms bigger than this ‘crater.’ Probably just a rock from the stars. Let it lie."

Pergrad is the aging head of Shepshed’s town guard, a role he’s held less out of talent than tenure. In a village where authority is given to the eldest available candidate, Pergrad is what passes for law and order: forgetful, irritable, and largely indifferent to most goings-on. Despite his reluctance, he is the town’s best source of official information - provided the players can extract it through the haze of misremembering and dismissal.

Description

He is a hunched, thin man with a permanent squint and a patchy grey beard. His mailshirt hangs loosely over his bony frame, and his guard tabard is usually stained with ash or soup. A long walking stick serves more for stability than enforcement, and his heavy boots scuff loudly with each step. His eyes are watery, but sharp when annoyed—an increasingly frequent state.

Traits and Motivations

Pergrad values quiet over truth, and calm over correctness. He considers most events a nuisance, especially those that disturb Shepshed’s rhythm. While he’s loyal to the village, he’s more inclined to downplay trouble than confront it. In truth, he’s frightened—of change, of danger, and especially of the idea that something might come that’s beyond his control. He doesn’t trust Fenton Shornshod’s tale, not because he disbelieves it, but because he doesn’t want to live in a world where it might be true.
