Opening: The Attack on the High Road

This is one of the opening options for the quest "The Dragon's Hall".

The Merchant's Guild building is busy and crowded. There is a fearful air to the place: clerks bustle hither and thither with worried expressions, and small groups of older, more serious merchants stride purposefully down the corridors, trailing assistants behind them. Something has happened - something serious.

The players may be directed to the crater in the high road near Shepshed from wherever they currently are: a contract posted on the notice board, or the knowing nod of a tavern owner asked if there is any work nearby will direct the players to the contract. Asking around about those who posted the contract will reassure the players that the Merchant's Guild takes their contract and their contractors seriously – they pay well for serious business.

The players can approach the nearest representative of the Guild, a nearby merchant or town official, who will inform them that there is a Guild office near the site in question: the characters can go to the crater, find the problem, and bring proof of solution to the office in Llanybydder. There are varying rates that the Guild pays depending on the difficulty of the mission: they estimate roughly 300 gp per character involved, but may pay higher if difficulties are encountered and overcome. No payment until proof of solution.

The players will be sent to the crater on the high road near Shepshed, which is less than a day’s walk to Llanybydder, and have a root around for clues as to what caused it.
