Klad

Many of the cities of the modern day are built on the bones of antiquity, and Klad is a testament to the artistry of old: the acropolis rises above a sprawling city of marble and terracotta, where temples are as plentiful as granaries, and the streets are filled with worshippers, pilgrims, and inquisitors.

Klad, often referred to as the "City of Gods," is not only one of the oldest cities in Endon but also one of the most significant both culturally and religiously. Situated at the heart of the Greenmarsh, on a massive plateau that overlooks the fertile lands where two great rivers converge, Klad has long been a hub for both commerce and divine devotion. The strategic position, with its freshwater springs and abundance of fertile land, made the city a natural choice for settlement from the earliest days of civilization.

Originally known as Mnassesq-Tlassri, the "Holy Place," the city was founded by the Ssthessic, who saw the plateau as a sacred ground upon which to build their great temple to their serpent gods. Some of the oldest buildings still show the grandeur of yuan-ti architecture, with sweeping marble façades and intricate serpent carvings. After the yuan-ti were driven from the region, Klad’s strategic location made it a magnet for different peoples, leading to its transformation into the sprawling metropolis it is today.

On Arrival to Klad

"Whitewashed walls and strings of multicoloured flags line the streets of the City of Gods, as the roads fill with the sounds of multitudes - but not of vendors, travellers, or merchants. Here can be found, on the worn cobbles marked with symbols of old, the clerics, the priests, the soothsayers, and the holy knights.

Bright signs hung from carts proclaim their cargo of religious relics and holy symbols, beggars offer their blessings in exchange for coin or food, and the guards that patrol the streets in pairs wear tabards not of the city's crest, but of their chosen gods."

Klad's walls, some of the thickest in Endon, have endured through the centuries, a testament to the city’s long history of both religious fervor and martial protection. The red brick walls are a focal point of the famed ballad “The Walls of the City of Gods,” which celebrates the endurance and strength of the city’s defences. Within these walls lies a mosaic of cultures, faiths, and political forces, with towering structures, sacred temples, and sacred sites creating an awe-inspiring skyline.

Despite the city’s overwhelming religious significance, Klad is much more than just a center for worship. It is a thriving metropolis, filled with bustling markets, endless commerce, and a myriad of residents from all walks of life. While humans are the dominant population, the city also hosts diverse elven, dwarven, halfling, and gnomish communities, creating a melting pot of cultures.

It is common to hear different languages spoken in the streets, and the air is thick with the mingling scents of incense, spices, and exotic goods. Klad, with its long history and wealth of resources, draws pilgrims from all corners of Endon, making it not just a place of religion but a major economic and social hub as well.

However, despite its prosperity, the miasma of smoke that rises from the city - whether from cooking, incense, or sacrificial fires - gives the place an air of mystery and otherworldliness, as if the very city itself is in constant devotion to its gods.

The Grand Market

The heart of Klad's bustling economy is the Grand Market, located at the top of the massive twin staircases that lead up to the acropolis. What was once a simple stable for the yuan-ti cohort stationed in Mnassesq-Tlassri is now a vast, indoor bazaar that is always open and never still. This market is a reflection of Klad’s vast cultural diversity, hosting merchants, vendors, and traders from across the known world.

On Entering the Grand Market

"One can find almost anything in the Grand Market, from exotic spices and rare silks to enchanted trinkets and sacred relics from distant lands. The hustle and bustle of the market is a feast for the senses: the clatter of trade negotiations, the scent of foreign foods being prepared in street-side stalls, and the shimmering colors of goods from all over Endon."

The markets of Klad are not just a place of commerce, however - it is also a gathering place where people from all walks of life converge, and whispers of religious and political intrigue are exchanged between the stalls.

The market is not only an economic powerhouse, but a cultural one as well. In the evening, as the sun dips below the horizon, the Grand Market transforms into a social hub, with locals and visitors alike gathering to share stories, barter, and participate in impromptu performances of music and theater.

The area around the market is lined with taverns, inns, and religious shrines, where merchants can take a break from the day's dealings or find solace in the worship of their gods. But despite its vibrancy, the market is also a place of competition, where rival merchant guilds fight for control over the best stalls and the richest trade routes.

The balance of power in the market can shift as quickly as the tides, with new players emerging and old powers falling into disarray.

Pantheon of Klad

At the very heart of Klad stands the Pantheon, the greatest and most impressive temple in all of Endon. It is a testament to the power of faith and devotion, not only to the gods but to the city itself. Massive marble columns rise toward the sky, supporting a golden roof that glows in the sunlight. Inside, the space is vast and awe-inspiring, with alcoves dedicated to nearly every deity worshiped in Endon. Despite its religious purpose, the Pantheon is also one of the most formidable fortresses on the continent.

Though primarily a place of worship, the Pantheon is also a symbol of Klad's authority. It is the seat of the High Priesthood, where important religious and political decisions are made. The Pantheon’s influence stretches far beyond the confines of the city, as many of the religious leaders who reside within its walls have sway over the Kingdom’s rulers and distant lands. Despite the peaceful rituals that take place within its sacred halls, the Pantheon has seen its share of political unrest and intrigue, with power struggles between factions of the clergy, and occasional violent confrontations between competing sects.

Way of the Valiant

Of the many religions that call Klad home, none are as prominent as the Way of the Valiant, a sect founded in the city and devoted to the virtues of compassion, justice, and the defense of the meek. Followers of the Way are easily recognizable by their flowing blue robes, face coverings, and red tabards adorned with the deeds of their service. Members of the Way, or Valiants, pride themselves on their role as protectors of the downtrodden and the weak.

The Upper Keep. The Way’s stronghold, the Upper Keep on the acropolis, is a place of learning and service, where Valiants train in combat, theology, and charity. It is said that the Valiants' influence is so great that their decisions can shift the political landscape of Klad itself.
