Endonian New Year Festival

Every year, the town of Eldbrook plays host to the largest celebration of the new year in the Kingdom: specifically, travellers make their way to Greenmarsh Henge, which rises a short distance out of town into the marsh, and the Stone Tree that stands there. Travellers from all over the Kingdom - and many from the lands beyond - arrive to the Boater's Dockmarkets to buy, sell, barter, and steal in preparation for another year of life in Endon.

The Endonian New Year Festival traces its roots back to the ancient druids who first consecrated Greenmarsh Henge as a sacred site. According to legend, the henge was aligned with celestial markers, its standing stones designed to capture the first light of the year’s turning. Over centuries, the festival evolved from a strictly spiritual gathering into a grand cultural celebration, blending ancient rites with the kingdom’s growing sense of unity. Greenmarsh Henge remains the focal point, where symbolic fires are lit to banish the shadows of the past and welcome the dawn of new opportunities.

On Approaching the Festival

"Eldbrook's usual air of fish and marsh-wind is gone, replaced with the buzz of anticipation: the air hums with excitement and the mingling scents of roasted meats, spiced mead, and wildflowers. The road is alive with travelers—merchants leading carts laden with wares, performers in colorful costumes juggling or playing flutes, and families with garlands draped over their shoulders.

The town's gates, festooned with banners of gold and green, open wide to reveal cobbled streets teeming with life. Stalls line every avenue, spilling over with vibrant goods, while laughter and music echo from every corner. Beyond the bustling market square, the distant silhouette of Greenmarsh Henge stands like a sentinel, beckoning all toward the heart of the celebration."

Celebrations at the Henge. The heart of the festival lies in the vibrant ceremonies held at Greenmarsh Henge. At dawn, crowds gather to witness the first sunrise of the new year illuminate the henge’s ancient stones, a spectacle said to bring good fortune. Throughout the day, the henge becomes the stage for bardic performances, storytelling, and a grand communal feast featuring seasonal dishes and delicacies brought by attendees. The festival culminates with a night-time lantern release, symbolizing hopes and wishes for the coming year as the sky fills with a sea of glowing lights.

Customs and Traditions. The Endonian New Year Festival is steeped in cherished customs. Participants don vibrant attire adorned with symbols of renewal, such as sprouting leaves and sunbursts, to honor the festival’s themes of growth and light. A popular tradition involves the gifting of “sunstones,” small polished crystals said to carry blessings of warmth and prosperity. Families often gather to weave garlands of herbs and flowers, which they hang on doorways or carry to the henge to cast into the sacred fire as offerings for the year ahead.

The Role of Eldbrook. As the closest settlement to Greenmarsh Henge, Eldbrook plays a pivotal role in hosting the festival. The town’s inns and boarding houses brim with visitors, and temporary camps spring up in nearby fields to accommodate the influx. The local merchants' guild oversees the logistics, from ensuring the supply of festival goods to organizing security for the thousands of attendees.
