Most visited of all of the Henges, the Henge at Greenmarsh sits far out into the swamp near the town of Eldbrook. It is the site of the Endonian New Year Festival, the Stone Tree of the Marsh, and the twin Henge to the Callidan stones. The Henge consists of two levels: the top level sits on a granite hillock jutting out of the marsh, on which the stones themselves sit in a spiral with the lodestone in the centre. Beneath that are the carved catacombs, containing the skeletons of ancient and revered goliath heroes. The Stone Tree sits on an outcrop to the southeast, near the edge of the spiral.
The Greenmarsh Henge is unusual of the other henges, which merely lead to other places in the world – or other planes. But this Henge, paired with the Henge at the edge of the Callidan Forest, will deposit the traveller, unintending or not, at the same place but a different time.
Few know the secret of the Greenmarsh Henge – after all, it sits abandoned for most of the year except for the occasional pilgrim and on the lunar New Year festival. But the fact remains that the Henge has the power to transport someone back in time. On the winter solstice, during the longest night of the year, anyone who touches the lodestone at the centre of the Henge, and anyone within the spiral at the same time, will be drawn back in time to the dawn of the day following the winter solstice some years in the past. [see the table below]
Catacombs of the Stoneblooded Heroes
Beneath the spiral Henge, carved into the granite millennia ago, are the remains of the Stoneblood warriors who defended the Goliath Dominion from the legendary beasts that roamed the world in the days of the Elder Giants. They are tended by a small number of caretakers, members of a non-violent sect of the Cult of the Henges, who light the candles and ensure that the tombs are properly cared for. They report to the Greenmarsh giant, with whom they have reached an understanding.
The Stone Tree of the Marsh
The legends of the Stone Trees of Endon are too long to detail here, but suffice it to say that their importance to goliath culture cannot be overstated, and this site, already hallowed by the presence of the Henge, is the soil on which the last Tree was planted. It remains to this day, a holy plant in a holy place, in memory of the defeat of the goliaths by the Ssthessic. Its trunk is white stone, impervious to any mortal axe, and grows only a centimeter a year.
The Pull of Old Magicks
All of the Henges radiate magic, and anyone who acts as a caretaker of the stones will occasionally need to deal with any intruders – sentient or otherwise – who come to try to take advantage of the wellspring that flows from these stones. Some are feeble enough that the caretakers of the catacombs can deal with them, but occasionally they require seasoned monster-slayers, or even the intervention of the Greenmarsh giant.
The Giant of the Greenmarsh
The Henge at Greenmarsh is one of the few places in the world that hosts a peaceful interaction between giants and the lesser races every year: at the Endonian New Year Festival, the festival-goers at the Henge are visited by a great figure, 40-feet in height and covered in plants and the nests of small creatures. The blessing of the giant is seen as good fortune, and the local often leave offerings, but the presence of the giant is a duty: they also visit the stones on the dawn of the day following the winter solstice, to greet and guide the victims of the Henge.
