"This is my place, interloper. It is the place of the dead, where vengeance sleeps. A cursed place. Someone has come stealing once again. Their presence is an insult!"

One hundred years ago, Gurtal was the owner of the mine on the White Downs, above the village of Whitehill. They were prosperous, mining coal and gems from the seams beneath the hills, and they developed a machine to pump the dangerous stythe gas out of the shafts. However, on the night of his daughter's wedding, the machine was sabotaged, killing everyone inside, including Gurtal.

Description

Gurtal is now a ghost, the spectre of what he once was. In life, he was a gnome of three feet high, wearing a nice suit for the reception, with small spectacles balanced on his nose and a large bald patch. If it were not for the aurora of blue light and the ability to phase through walls, he would look like an amicable father-figure.

Traits and Motivations

Gurtal is tied to the world by his unfinished business: the machine which he designed and which killed everyone he loves. When the machine was turned on, he returned, and will remain until the machine is destroyed.
