The Radiant were among the most beloved and tragic of the First Ones, born of a dreaming moment within the Endless Night when sorrow gave way to beauty, and grief turned briefly toward hope. Beings of light, grace, and righteous protection, the Radiant were guardians of harmony, makers of life, and ultimately the first to perish in the War of the First Ones. Their sacrifice seeded the heavens with stars.
Though now gone in form, the Radiant remain in legacy—guiding lights, both literal and spiritual, to all who walk the world below.
Origin: Dreaming in Light
The Radiant were the fourth of the Children of the Endless Night, emerging after the horrors of the Necrist, the strangeness of the Leviathans, and the creeping growth of the Arboriad. They were born of the happier grace of the world's dreaming—a flicker of joy before the mother slipped once more toward sleep.
They embodied the ideal of protection, the kindness of creation, and the conviction that beauty could be safeguarded. Where others questioned the world’s worth, the Radiant saw it as a precious, fleeting gift.
They were brilliant, both literally and metaphorically—shining figures crowned in light, trailing banners of flame and song. Their voices were like music, their presence like dawn. They were warriors, teachers, lovers, and poets all at once.
Nature and Form
Radiant were not singular in form but unified in purpose. They appeared as beings of living light, with features both alien and humanlike—seraphic, ethereal, surrounded by halos of fire or floating motes of brilliance. Some took the shape of lions with wings of flame, others as genderless humanoids wreathed in gold and thunder.
They possessed unmatched command over:
Light, in all its forms—illumination, radiance, and even truth.
Healing, drawn from pure life-force.
Divine inspiration, fueling the hearts of other beings with courage, hope, and purpose.
They did not merely shine—they revealed. Their gaze could show someone who they truly were, for good or ill.
Philosophy and Purpose
The Radiant believed that existence was sacred, and that it must be defended. To them, the world was a nursery of new thought, new spirit, and new potential. Their guiding tenets were:
Stewardship, not dominion.
Protection, not control.
Inspiration, not coercion.
“Let us make children of our own,” they said in the early councils of the First Ones. Not for conquest, but for companionship, to share joy, and to continue the light they believed should never go out.
They often stood alongside the Arboriad and Elder Giants in early days, favoring growth and knowledge over rule or fear.
Role in the War of the First Ones
Tragically, it was the Radiant who fell first in the War of the First Ones.
When conflict broke between the elder siblings—giants, dragons, Arboriad, Necrist, and more—the Radiant stood as shield-bearers, not aggressors. They did not seek to conquer or to destroy. They sought to protect the fragile, to preserve balance, to defend the hopeful.
But theirs was a vulnerable strength. For all their light, they were not made for endless war. One by one, they were shattered—not just killed, but spent, as torches lighting the world.
In their final moments, the Radiant made a last gift: they cast their lifeblood into the sky, sacrificing their essence to become the sun, the moon, and the stars—a net of light to guide future generations. Where once they walked, now they watch.
