Tower of Dusk

Standing against the orange hues of the setting sun, the Tower of Dusk rises as a testament to a time when giants and goliaths coexisted in mutual respect and shared endeavors. Built as a gift from the Elder Giants to the Goliath Dominion before the Ssthessic Vrasa rose to power, the Tower was both a waystation and a monument. Its design reflects its dual purpose: it is built to accommodate both the towering forms of giants and the more modest stature of goliaths.

The Tower’s architecture is striking, following the fire giants’ traditional style. Its conical shape tapers into the sky, and its massive stone façade appears impervious to the wear of time. The horizontal entrance, high above the ground, once served as a practical feature for giant visitors, but now serves as an enigmatic invitation to those brave enough to scale its height. The structure also holds one of the extremely rare celestiveres—giant-crafted bronze mirrors created in collaboration with the goliaths. These artifacts are shrouded in mystery, their original purpose lost to the ages.

On entering the Tower of Dusk

"Stepping into the Tower of Dusk feels like entering a cavern carved by the hands of gods. The scale of the interior is awe-inspiring, with vaulted ceilings that stretch high above, supported by enormous stone ribs that seem to meld seamlessly into the conical walls. The floor, worn smooth by the passage of centuries, is a mosaic of immense stone slabs, some bearing faint carvings of geometric patterns and sigils too faded to decipher.

The walls are the true marvel, adorned with an unbroken sequence of murals carved directly into the stone. These murals recount the intertwined histories of the goliaths and giants, each scene flowing into the next with masterful continuity. Despite the erosion of time, many of the carvings remain distinct, showing titanic figures striding across storm-laden skies, goliaths bearing banners in ceremonial processions, and enigmatic scenes of giants forging celestial artifacts. The murals are illuminated by thin beams of light filtering through narrow, strategically placed slits in the walls, creating a dim but ethereal glow."

A Monument to Resilience

Twelve such towers once dotted the lands of the Goliath Dominion, each a marvel of fire giant craftsmanship. Though many are now in ruins, their immense scale and durable construction mean most remain standing, defiant against the passage of time. To smaller races, these towers are fortresses, and even nature’s fiercest elements can only slowly erode their grandeur.

Inside the Tower of Dusk lies its true wonder: intricately carved murals stretching across the inner walls of its three main floors. These carvings depict the shared history of giants and goliaths, from their mythic origins and the creation of the celestiveres to the catastrophic giant wars. The murals are not written records but artistic interpretations, which has made deciphering their full story a challenge. Archaeologists and adventurers have occasionally ventured into the Tower to study these carvings, but goliaths, fiercely protective of their heritage, have refused to aid in translating their meaning.

Despite its status as a historical treasure, the Tower has suffered losses. Many of its celestiveres have been looted, and some factions have attempted to dismantle the structure for resources or study—actions that are seen as declarations of war by giants and goliaths alike.

A Fortress Turned Lair

As the Goliath Dominion declined, the Tower of Dusk became impractical for the smaller races to use and impossible to restore without the assistance of giants. Over time, it fell into ruin and was claimed by various monsters as a lair. Its immense scale presents unique challenges for would-be inhabitants; only creatures capable of flight, those as large as giants, or those skilled at navigating the cracked walls and lofty interiors have made it their home. The Tower’s cavernous halls echo with the sounds of its temporary occupants, a shadow of the vibrant refuge it once was.

A Noble’s Obsession

One of the most peculiar aspects of the Tower of Dusk is its curious preservation. Unlike its counterparts, this Tower remains in remarkably good condition, thanks to the eccentricities of the Lord of Lodban. A man of peculiar tastes, the Lord has taken the Tower as a personal project, funding its restoration with an obsession bordering on reverence. The battlements have been repaired, the intricate carvings retraced, and, most astonishingly, the celestivere remains intact and functional.

Yet, his interest raises questions. Rumors swirl about the true purpose of the celestiveres, with whispers that they hold the key to unlocking the secrets of giant magic. These speculations are only amplified by the interest shown by the University of Talbot and the Academy of Endon's Pass. While goliaths scoff at the idea, claiming that only their ancient magical traditions can activate the celestiveres, the Lord’s fixation continues to draw attention. Whether his intentions are academic, arcane, or more sinister remains a mystery.

The Tower of Dusk stands as a paradox: a relic of ancient unity, a haven for monsters, and a symbol of a nobleman’s peculiar obsession. It watches over the lands as it always has, its true purpose and future shrouded in uncertainty.
