Diary of Donk Stonefist - Brightwane 46

I saw that Draylor had posted a "Hiking club" on the bullentin board. Wasn't sure if i was interested until I saw him dragging his "supplies" across the camp. I decided to help him and got him organized. We then met up with Dev, Garth and Fisher and headed out. We headed northwest out of town and walked for about 3 days. While we were walking, we saw a huge mountain out in the distance and linus helped us come up with a name. We came over a peak and saw a small hamlet that sat on a huge gorge. By walking aroud we determined that it used to be a fishing village. As we got closer we realized how big this gorge really was - about 100 feet across. When we looked down we heard and saw a river a few hundred feet down. Ww came to the conclusion that the river had somehow eroded away the land to create the gorge. Even though this should take thousands of years this seems to have happened pretty fast.

We were curious about the water so Draylor came up with an idea to talk to a bird and see if it could fly down and get us a sample of the water. He talked to a small hawk and handed him a vial and it flew off into the gorge. Then he went over towards the forest and started talking to a hare, then he just blasted it with some type of radiant blast and killed it. Then the hawk came back and FIsher grabbed the vial with his mage hand. Draylor was talking with the hawk and it started to attack him and he killed it too. I saw a different side of Draylor this trip...

Soph, Draylor has to be the worst druid ever.

He mentioned the idea of starting a hiking club, with its first adventure to check out the obsidian field that he saw when we were trying to find a dinosaur for Garth. You know how I feel about nature, and especially exercise… but I did want to see it. It’s got to be magical, even if it’s just in the mundane, awe-inspiring sense.

Donk and Garth managed to keep him on task as he gathered provisions for our trip. They even talked Linus and Murph into joining us on our field trip. There was a new guy, a human a little younger than me named Fisher who joined us too. Apparently, he’s a failed magic student, but he did pick up a few cantrips.

We headed out north of the city. Linus had a grand time pointing out all of the cool rocks and the geological properties of the area we were passing through. No one cares about rocks like Linus, but he’s got enough enthusiasm to make me wish I did.

Draylor spent most of the trip drunk, tossing the empty bottles aside as he finished with them. I never saw a druid litter until I met Draylor.

Three days and a bit over 30 miles later, we ran out of road. We found a run-down hamlet that looks as though it supported around a dozen families in its heyday a very long time ago.

The mountain off in the distance didn’t really seem to be getting much closer – I wonder just how far away it really is. After much discussion, Linus pronounced Ignice a good name for it, and it seems as good as any other. I wonder what the people who lived here before the Collapse called it…

Draylor used his spectral Aasimar wings to fly up and scout, and he discovered that the hamlet is at the edge of a chasm that was deep enough that he couldn’t see the bottom. It was wide enough that we couldn’t cross it, and long enough that going around it would present its own challenge if it’s even possible.

In the distance, he saw the obsidian field again. He could spot repeating rippled formations that seemed to spread from a central point, but he couldn’t see where that point was.

As we got closer to the chasm, we could hear the distant sound of a river at the bottom. The land fell away without warning to form the steep cliff. When I looked over the edge, the water shimmered a silver-blue color and it gave off the aura of magic. Linus said that natural water flow would take thousands of years to carve out a chasm like this.

Murph was keen to get a sample of the water, and I’ve got to admit I was curious too. Garth suggested that Draylor could ask a bird to fill up a vial. So Draylor worked some deal with a Kestrel. I don’t speak to animals, but it seemed like Draylor was offering a food for services trade. I think he might have offered to trade his squirrel for the sample.

Whatever deal was made, the kestrel flew off with a vial from Murph and Draylor started making rabbit noises. A hare popped up in the field and gave Draylor a death glare. Draylor fried the hare with some kind of radiant magic with no warning or provocation.

The kestrel flew back up with the vial, Fisher grabbed it with Mage Hand, and Draylor tried to give the bird the dead hare. There was a short exchange, and the kestrel flew at Draylor’s sleeve. Draylor killed the bird with another radiant damage spell.

This doesn’t sit right with me, Soph. I’ve got little respect for stupid laws and the people who try to force their morality on others. But by the same token, it’s pretty basic – you don’t screw over people who try to help you.

While I was casting my Detect Magic ritual, Murph was studying the sample. It’s cold – very cold. He put a drop of it on his skin, and it left a mark. And sure enough, the water was magically cold.

Draylor tried to force his familiar – a black owl – to get him more of this supernaturally cold water. It “died” in its first attempt, but it was able to fill a wine bottle after he re-summoned it.

The rest of us decided to check out the hamlet once it became clear we wouldn’t be able to progress any further. Fisher found a stone cairn with the words “Fear the wind that chills the skin / Bar the door, don’t let it in.” We also found the remains of a mass grave.

The trip back was uneventful, except for Draylor’s discovery that his water evaporated completely after a couple of hours. Linus imparted further knowledge of rocks.
