Šraku has seen good days as an Orc capital city in Kildar and bad days as its own empty husk when most of its population left to due to poverty and repressions. Yet the days of utter chaos are something new even for this ancient place.
Since the portals opened, the Eldritch Inquisition has been trying to establish full control over all the portal trade, especially magical items. However, to every action, there is always opposed an equal reaction. The Guilds quickly figured that sea-portals opening near Šraku and leading to Faerun would make a perfect magical item trade outpost. Even in the days of its glory Šraku has never seen such massive financial investments. New and new alleys and buildings grow right on the ruins, rickety boards on centuries-old stones, so fast there is no way to keep up with the city layout. Same goes for the residents: more and more people of all ways of life are trying their luck either in Faerun trade directly or providing services for the merchants.
In this race for profit few care for safety regulations, if they even know a first thing about it. What an unfortunate coincidence that the main object of trade is quite delicate and tends to explode when handled improperly, while Šraku is being rebuilt with cheap, easy to handle, and very flammable wood. This, unsurprisingly, results in whole quarters burning down or vanishing in more peculiar ways at roughly the same rate as the new ones are erected. But as long as the magical item trade is as profitable as it is now, there will be no shortage of gold-chasers and desperados flocking to Šraku from all corners of Kildar.
If you are ready to take a risk and visit the hustle, bustle and fires of Šraku, don’t forget to write a will and secure your valuables in an incombustible container. For the rest, you can not be prepared anyway.
