Overview

The Mountains of the Unknown stretch from the southern edge of the Thornwoods across the southern tip of Kildar, ending near the swamplands by Scalepoint. Unlike many rugged ranges, these mountains are verdant and alive: mist-laden forests cling to steep slopes, rivers cascade through hidden valleys, and waterfalls tumble into secluded glades. Streams, lakes, and natural pools crisscross the range, creating a network of waterways that enrich the soil and sustain the abundant flora and fauna. The region’s heavy fey influence manifests in both the landscape and the strange phenomena that explorers encounter, from ephemeral lights in the mist to whispered voices carried on the wind.

Notable locations

The most significant settlement is Anfyn, a city uniquely shaped by its position within a Fey Crossing—a place where the valley of the material realm aligns closely with the Feywild, sometimes appearing as one and the same. The Holy Temple of Ascension dominates the city, said to offer a direct path to Lady Elaine’s lands in the Feywild, where the souls of her followers travel after death.

The Mines of the Unknown, located in the southeastern reaches of the range, are ancient tunnels of mysterious origin. Their depths remain largely unexplored, and the few who have entered speak of bizarre phenomena, enchanted creatures, and natural formations suffused with fey magic. Though dangerous, the mines are revered as places of power and mystery.

Mines of the Unknown

The Mines of the Unknown are ancient tunnels that begin in the southeastern Mountains of the Unknown. Their origins are long forgotten, and the depths remain unexplored. Few dare to enter, and those who do rarely return.

History

Legends say the mines are older than any recorded settlement in Kildar. Over the centuries, occasional adventurers have ventured inside, never to be seen again. Rare sightings of monstrous creatures emerging from the entrances have been reported, adding to the mines’ reputation as a place of mystery and danger.
