Joinable
Player characters who join or are affiliated with this faction have an above average knowledge of Dragonborn, Eir Andusk, and the Portal Network. If you want to be a member, you'll need the Guard or Soldier background and proficiency in Insight. Oath of the Watchers Paladin works great for this too.
Description
The Order of Gateway Custodians is a specialized Order within the Eldritch Inquisition, tasked with a responsibility of immense strategic importance: the protection and regulation of the ancient portal network that spans Kildar. Originally reactivated by the Portallist’s Workshop, the network now falls under their jurisdiction.
The Custodians maintain garrisons at every reactivated portal site, where they inspect travelers, monitor magical signatures, collect tolls, and enforce strict transit laws. Though their work may seem administrative on the surface, they stand as the first line of defense against interplanar threats.
Members of the Custodians can be recognized by the Orders Heraldry: A silver shield with a purple ligningbolt. Most wear full plate armor, decorated with cloth of purple and silver colors.
Goals, Aspirations & Fears
The Gateway Custodians are driven by duty, caution, and control. Their core goal is the protection of the portal network and those who use it. They seek to prevent misuse, corruption, or invasion through these gateways, no matter the cost. Their aspiration is a world where the portals serve civilization safely, regulated by law and protected by force.
Their fears are deeply rooted in history. The devastation once visited upon their Dragonborn homeland of Eir Andusk when portal misuse invited invasion and catastrophe is a wound that still bleeds in their collective memory.
Structure & people
The order of Gateway Custodians has a relatively high number of Dragonborn’s, with most of them hailing from the dragonborn settlement of Eir Andusk.
The community of Eir Andusk provides the Elite Warriors to the Custodian order. The island is home to the garrison of Custodian Elite Troops, who are the quick reaction force in case one of the Portal Gateways comes under threat.
Leader Izereth Flamewing
Order Master Izereth Flamewing: A stern and battle-hardened Dragonborn of ancient red lineage, Izereth is both feared and respected. A survivor of the Eir Andusk catastrophe, she has turned her trauma into purpose. Izereth embodies the Custodians’ ideals: discipline, strength, and absolute justice. She believes trust is earned slowly—and revoked swiftly.
Quest Giver
Gatewarden Elin Gathra: An efficient and sharply dressed half-elf with a keen eye for detail and a dry sense of humor. Elin oversees one of the busiest portal hubs in Kildar and always seems to be two steps ahead of whatever chaos is coming through the gate. She’s pragmatic, witty, and surprisingly empathetic—but firmly believes in following procedure to the letter. Elin is the kind of person who offers help with a form in one hand and a sword in the other.
Opponent
Despite the nobility of their mission, the Gateway Custodians face few opponents they truly fear. Petty smugglers, thieves, and unauthorized travelers regularly attempt to exploit the portal network, but such threats are routine and easily managed.
However, two emerging concerns have begun to challenge their authority. First, the Fey have returned, offering mysterious and unpredictable alternative paths of travel between planes and locations, routes that lie beyond Custodian control.
Second, a newly formed group of saboteurs has begun launching coordinated attacks against portal sites. Their motives remain unclear, but their strikes are growing more frequent, and more precise marking them as a rising threat the Custodians can no longer ignore.
