Choosing a Class

Detailed explanations of the classes, subclasses, backgrounds and abilities can be found in the Players Handbook and the additional source books, all of which can be found on DnD Beyond once you’ve joined our DnD Beyond campaign.

The 2024 Players Handbook provides an handy overview table on page 33 on the complexity of the various classes. If you’re an inexperienced DnD player, we highly recommend choosing a low- or average complexity class and to only use content from the 2024 Players Handbook.

  • Low Complexity: Fighter & Rogue

  • Average Complexity: Barbarian, Cleric, Paladin, Ranger & Wizard

  • High Complexity: Artificer, Bard, Druid, Monk, Sorcerer & Warlock

Multiclassing is allowed, but we do not recommend it for inexperienced players.

Leveling

When choosing your class, you have to set a class level. This campaign we start our characters at level 3 and level up our characters at certain dates, which can be seen in the table. If you’re joining the campaign later than September, make sure to set the correct level during character creation. You can see what your current level should be in the Leveling and Loot Calendar

Assigning Ability Scores

If you’re inexperienced in building a DnD character, we recommend choosing ‘Standard Array’ to divide over your abilities. If you’re more experienced you can choose ‘Point Buy’.

Adding items or creatures to your character

Whenever you want to select an item or creature within your character options, for example when adding something to inventory or when picking wildshape forms or a creature you want to summon, it is important to keep the following in mind:

  • Filter by the allowed sources only

  • Do not select creatures tagged with the “legacy” keyword. (These creatures have either been removed or, more likely, replaced with an updated version.)

  • Firearms can't be used since they haven't been invented in our campaign.

For example, here’s the list of Beasts you can pick from for druid wildshapes.

If you join campaign 3 at a later date than September, you may add additional starting GP to your inventory (in addition to your normal starting equipment), to allow you to buy items and bring you up to speed with the other players in terms of gathered loot.
