Overview

The name Eir Andusk translates to Southern Fortress. Situated on the eastern slope of the islands volcano, the Dragonborn Fortress dominates the island’s landscape. It serves as the headquarters for the Gateway Custodians, the elite order within the Eldritch Inquisition responsible for protecting Kildar’s portal network. Its walls are forged from cooled lava and reinforced with draconic runes, integrating both martial and magical defenses.

After the the portal network was placed under the protection of the Eldritch Inquisition, the Dragonborn of Eir Andusk created the Order of Gateway Custodians within the Eldritch Inquisition. The community of Eir Andusk now provides the Elite Warriors to the Custodian order and the island is now home to the garrison of Custodian Elite Troops, who are the quick reaction force in case one of the Portal Gateways comes under threat.

History

The fortress rose from the ashes of the Dragonborn village destroyed during the Crimson Dusk volcanic events (524). The silver dragon Armathar guided the reconstruction, taming the volcano with his icy breath and shaping the walls of the fortress from molten rock.

After Armathar's death in 605 at the hands of Umbraxis in the Shadowfell, the fortress became the center of the newly formed Order of Gateway Custodians, who continue to garrison the stronghold and defend the portal network.

The fortress also preserves the island’s unique cultural traditions. The ritual known as the Taming of the Mountain continues to be performed annually, commemorating Armathar’s intervention and the founding of the fortress.

An attack on Eir Andusk by the Lich Coven in November 604 after hijacking the portal network, shook the community out of their isolationist culture. They struck a deal with the Portallist Workshop, to provide security for the network. With the death of the ancient silver dragon Armathar at the hands of Umbraxis in the Shadowfell in May of the year 605, the settlement lost its guardian protector against the volcano and outside threats. After the the portal network was placed under the protection of the Eldritch Inquisition, the Dragonborn of the island created the the Order of Gateway Custodians within the Eldritch Inquisition. The community of Eir Andusk now provides the Elite Warriors to the Custodian order and the island is now home to the garrison of Custodian Elite Troops, who are the quick reaction force in case one of the Portal Gateways comes under threat.

524-604

The island, once part of a chain of mountains that connected to the mistborne mountains, was severed from the mainland during the cataclysmic events of the Crimson Dusk. The volcanic eruption that accompanied the end battle of the Crimson Dusk, not only reshaped the landscape and sank part of the mountain chain into the sea, leaving the settlement isolated. The physical disconnect from the mainland has also caused a psychological disconnect, as the Dragonborns of Eir Andusk become increasingly isolationist between the year 524 and 604.

The devastation caused by the volcanic eruptions in 524 forced the Dragonborn of Eir Andusk to rebuild their home from the ashes. An ancient silver dragon, by the name of Armathar, was drawn to the island by the volcanic activity, and the pleas for help from its inhabitants. His icy breath tamed the fiery mountain, ending the eruptions, and he shaped the towering walls of the Fortress out of the molten earth. Where the simple fishing village, was whiped away by the volcano, a formidable fortress rose from it's ashes.

After rebuilding Eir Andusk, Armathar concealed himself in dragonborn guise, and lived among the Dragonborn of Eir Andusk, who kept his true identity secret to all visitors of the island. The silver dragon in disguise sat at the head of the village council. And every year , the members of the fortress gathered at the volcano to witness the ritual known to them as 'the taming of the mountain' As the ancient dragon would reveal his true form and descend into the volcano's depths and cools the molten core with its icy breath.

Outsiders, unaware of the dragon's existence, would only be able to describe the annual event from afar. They might witness the gathering of Dragonborn at the volcano, the chanting and the rituals. They might hear the roar of the volcano as the dragon descended into its depths. But they would never know the true nature of the being that keeps the volcano in check.
