Formation of the Kanian Kingdom (2570–2910 BGC)
The Kingdom of Kania emerged even before the Cataclysm, when the human tribe known as the “Aro” came upon the ruins of the Džun Empire. Around the same time, orcish tribes arrived in these lands, and the two races were forced into a bloody war over the right to settle there. It was during this period that the scattered Aro tribes united their strength to stand against the orcs. Thus, Kania was formed – a nation that, throughout its history, has been more federative than centralized.
After the Cataclysm, this distinction only became more pronounced. Where once Kania was administratively divided into cities, now it is divided into allods, each governed by a Namestnik chosen from among the local nobility. A unified body of laws, by which Kania is governed, is called “Kanian Truth”, but there are also regional codes – each allod has its own traditions, so to speak. Matters of nationwide importance are decided by the Council of Namestniks – The Grand Council of Kania.
For many centuries, the Council has been led by the Great Mage Tenses, who earned this honor during the time of the Orc Wars. His leadership has not always been uncontested – Kania’s history remembers the time when an ancient aristocratic family challenged his rule. In an effort to prevent civil war, Tenses voluntarily stepped down, and for over a thousand years, the Valirian family ruled Kania. To this day, many Kanian nobles pride themselves on tracing their lineage back to Valirians.
The Great Cataclysm brought their rule to an end – it was then that Tenses once again rose to lead Kania, when the world was shattered into fragments.
