Trolls are massive, territorial, and social humanoid omnivores. They are well known for their brutish nature, incredible resilience, and superb regenerative abilities. Thriving in diverse ecosystems across all of Sarnout, these creatures typically live in small groups of approximately a dozen members.

The defining biological trait of a troll is the raw mana dissolved within its blood. This mana is processed by internal chemicals and then circulated throughout the body to fuel the troll's legendary vitality, strength, and regenerative abilities. While this mana cycle provides the energy for their survival, regulating such a volatile internal process is an immensely complex biological task. The species' generally low intelligence is primarily a result of metabolic prioritization. Because such a vast amount of caloric energy and internal regulation is dedicated to maintaining their massive physical stature and the mana cycle, very little is left to fuel the development of a complex brain. Furthermore, from an evolutionary standpoint, trolls have had little need to develop high-level cognitive functions; their sheer physical power, resilience, and rapid healing are so effective that they rarely face challenges that require advanced problem-solving or strategic thinking to survive.

This mana cycle grants trolls immense physical power. An average troll is two times the size of a grown male orc and possesses equivalent strength -- capable of knocking down a small tree with a single swipe of its claws. Furthermore, this internal energy allows them to adapt rapidly to nearly any environment, getting easily accustomed to the extreme temperatures and local food sources. Most predators avoid trolls entirely; they are not only dangerous to hunt but their flesh and blood are highly toxic due to the concentrated mana content.

Despite their incredible survival skills, trolls have not conquered Sarnout for a very specific reason: their greatest strength is also their greatest hindrance. While trolls have evolved to use mana to survive, it is inherently toxic to them, and slowly withers their bodies away. When a troll experiences stress, it must circulate more mana to compensate, which causes its body to strain even more. Conversely, living in a mana-deprived zone causes a similar withering effect. This creates a state of dependency that makes trolls extremely lazy and fiercely territorial. To minimize the need for mana circulation, they prefer to eat large quantities of food in one sitting and then remain stationary for long periods to digest.

Interestingly, despite their internal mana saturation, the unique structure of troll skin prevents them from emitting mana radiation. The only exception is the "ultra-troll" -- a rare subspecies of stone troll that grows mana crystals directly from its skin, resulting in a mild ambient background radiation.

Sarnout is constantly irradiated by ambient mana background. Trolls have evolved to absorb this energy with miraculous efficiency, surpassing even the most advanced mana-extraction technologies. Arisen scientists continue to study the species in hopes of cracking this biological mystery.

Because trolls act as natural mana-conductors, various technologies have been developed to use them as "living batteries" for magitech applications. However, handling them is hazardous. Their blood is saturated with raw mana and toxic byproducts, making it lethal if ingested and dangerous to handle without specialized precautions.

Troll blood is a highly valued magic catalyst that allows weaker mages -- or even non-mages -- to perform feats otherwise beyond their capabilities. However, the blood loses its potency almost immediately upon the troll's death, requiring expensive and specialized preservation methods to remain useful.

Stone trolls are the most visually striking subspecies, characterized by a sturdy, rocky exterior. This "skin" is composed of actual stone, a result of the trolls consuming earth and minerals to reach subterranean insects. Over generations, the mana flowing through their bodies became aligned with these minerals. Their regenerative processes eventually began producing rock instead of standard tissue, providing excellent camouflage and additional protection.

Though considered low-intelligence, trolls are semi-sentient creatures with rudimentary language, culture, and religion. While they lack complex hierarchies, a group is usually led by the strongest or smartest individual. These leaders occasionally distinguish themselves by wearing clothing or jewelry stolen from ogres or cyclopes -- creatures who are more culturally and intellectually advanced, but share similar physical proportions.

While most trolls rely on their razor-sharp claws and powerful jaws, rare "bright" individuals have been known to utilize simple tools or weapons. When united under a dominant leader, troll groups display significantly improved coordination and problem-solving abilities.
