Languages of Sarnout
/

Elfin stands as the primary language for trade and diplomacy throughout Sarnout. This dominance began during the ancient era. The Elves established the world’s first global civilisation. They acted as the primary emissaries and technological innovators of the old world. Their sophisticated culture spread through every known land before the Cataclysm. They shared secrets of magic and architecture in their native tongue. Consequently, Elfin became the standard for merchants, scholars, and explorers.

Within the League, while being only one of three official languages, Elfin functions as the linguistic bridge between diverse races. It is the most common second language for League's denizens. Mastery of Elfin carries prestige and signifies a high level of education.

The Empire adopts a hostile stance towards the language, labelling it the "speech of the adversary". Hadaganians and Orcs frequently mock the language’s melodic vowels and flowery structure. They perceive it as decadent, weak, and inefficient. State propaganda encourages this ridicule to distance the citizenry from League influence. Civilian possession of books written in Elfin (or Ghibbermál) is a criminal offence. Only diplomats, military officers, and spies learn the language for state service. Merchants also study the tongue for its trade necessity. However, learning resources are scarce within the Empire. This policy often leaves Imperial citizens unable to communicate efficiently with foreigners, making them appear uneducated to the rest of Sarnout. Although, the Arisen usually do not participate in this mockery. Having existed before the Empire, they remember the Elves as peers and rivals from the ancient world. Arisen scholars view Elfin with reverence and intellectual appreciation. They value the language for its historical depth and its role in preserving pre-Cataclysm knowledge.

On neutral allods and Free Merchant outposts, Elfin remains the essential language of trade.
