The Arisen Zem

The people of the Zem follow a unique naming system. Their names consist of an Ancient Egyptian or Ancient African given name, preceded by their Hikut rank, which represents their status in the afterlife. In the modern era, these ranks have taken on the function of academic and professional titles (listed in parentheses).

Hierarchy of Zem ranks (from highest to lowest):

  • Nefer – Supreme ruler, warlord, or high priest.
    (Now – the Director and Ambassador of the Zem people. There can only be one Nefer at any given time, currently the Great Mage, Nefer Ur)

  • Nomarch – Governor, noble, royal vizier, Supreme commander, vicar.
    (Academician)

  • Negus – General, High Conjurer, Senior Ritual Master, Master Architect.
    (Senior Researcher).

  • Iasskul – Diviner, commander, lesser noble, master merchant, large landowner.
    (Professor)

  • Sarbaz – Senior officer, court noble, landowner, temple head.
    (Associate Professor)

  • İaver – Junior officer, royal guard, master craftsman, trade house administrator, priest.
    (Assistant)

  • Sarang – Soldier, merchant, artisan, caravan master, small business owner, keeper of ritual texts.
    (Researcher)

  • Semer – Squire, servant, junior clergy member.
    (Specialist)


Allowed ranks for your character:

As a level 1 character, you may choose between

  • Semer (the lowest rank, often assigned to those in servitude or apprenticeship).

  • Sarang (a more independent rank, suited for common soldiers, traders, and artisans).
