Protection from the Astral

This theory was developed by professor Iaver Khateshi and his research group at the Astral Academy of Jigran

This knowledge is based on research into the process of enchanting meteoric iron. For the theory to work, we must assume that the meteorite that struck Sarnout before the age of man came from another universe governed by entirely different laws. During its formation, the material exists in a “cooling” phase, during which it actively reads its environment and writes the surrounding physical and ontological laws into its crystallographic pattern. This pattern serves as a data carrier. Once the material reaches its “cold” state, the meteorite effectively stores a cast of the reality in which it was formed.

Magical impulses above a certain threshold can force the iron back into its “hot” phase, but when the influence weakens, the material enters the cooling phase again, allowing it to absorb and fix new environmental data. This is what occurred when its transition to Sarnout. The passage between worlds must have produced a massive magical surge, triggering a prolonged hot phase during which the meteorite released the accumulated imprint of its origin. By the time it landed, the iron was effectively empty, having shed its prior template during transit. The relative stability of Sarnout then allowed the iron to undergo material, magical, and ontological cooling. During this period, it fixed a new template reflecting Sarnout’s order within its structure.

At the moment of the Great Cataclysm, a massive magical impulse triggered another hot phase, effectively reversing the cooling process. This can be understood as an emergency response of the meteorite, intended to stabilise a threatened reality and preserve its own integrity. Instead of reading and recording the surrounding order, the iron began to radiate it, similar in behavior to fluorescence. In doing so, it formed a field that screened off harmful astral influences and began restructuring the surrounding reality according to the stable template recorded during its earlier cooling stage.

Today, these fragments maintain the integrity of the Allods by providing a constant flow of vital ontological energy. Technically, an Allod is a preserved "cast" of reality as it existed before the Cataclysm. The iron converts mana from the Astral into forms of natural energy and causality that are uniquely adaptable, effectively acting as a universal force that fits every environmental requirement. This energy fulfills the specific needs of the supported structure like a key fitting every lock, sustaining photosynthesis in areas of perpetual twilight or regulating the exact temperatures required for snow to melt, and thus enabling an allod to stay in the state of order that was

The stabilising effect only begins to fail when the total amount of structural detail contained in the remaining meteoric iron drops below a critical level. Early scholars attempted to explain this persistence through a fractal model, assuming that each fragment preserved a complete copy of the whole. Later research replaced this view with a holographic interpretation. Rather than containing a full template, each fragment holds partial structural information. As long as enough of this information remains distributed across the material, the full template can still be reconstructed and enforced. Empirical observation shows that if more than two thirds of a fragment’s original mass is removed, it can no longer maintain structural accuracy. At this point, the projection of the stored reality “glitches”. Physical anomalies begin to appear, and basic laws behave inconsistently (water flowing uphill). These effects do not spread evenly, and rather appear in localised patches where the projection lacks the detail required to maintain consistent order. Because this mechanism operates at a deep ontological level, it is vulnerable in theory to elements that contradict the stored template. Introducing tropical predators into a frozen biome is a common example. But in practice, allods are vast systems, and destabilisation would require overwhelming interference. Smaller contradictions resolve themselves. A lion placed in an icy environment weakens or dies, as it cannot function under the preserved laws of that space.

The Conclave eventually learned to imitate the work of meteoric iron, which then led to the development of the Ritual.

Allods themselves distort astral flows. Their mass and emission patterns bend astral currents in ways that can be measured and, in some cases, exploited. In rare applications an allod can act as a lens, redirecting astral flows across great distances, which can be used to overload anti-astral fields or deprive entire regions of mana. The most dangerous application is controlled convergence. Dense astral flows are forced into a confined region until they collapse and discharge along a single direction, producing a destructive jet. A construct designed to hold this state is called a collapsar. Such systems are inherently unstable, and introducing excess astral matter into the convergence disrupts alignment, causing the structure to fail and destroy itself before release.

Natural disasters on allods often originate outside their boundaries. With time, astral energy accumulates into giant masses and might be brought with strong currents, easily breaching allod’s screening field. When this occurs, the stored projection begins to glitch heavily, enabling earthquakes, eruptions, tsunamis, thermal gradients inversion and other catastrophes. More extreme cases involve gravity reverse and even spatial distortion, when an allod folds inward so that walking straight returns one to the starting point. Historical records describe temporary reversals of causality, spatial nonlocality, time behaving as a plane rather than a line, large scale superpositions that later collapse, and regions with sustained reductions in entropy, up until the point when it begins to run backward.
