Kania Today

At the threshold of the second millennium of the New Era, Kania has entered an age of change. The duality of power – secular and magical – has always been characteristic of Kania: its entire history is a struggle between the Kanian aristocracy and the Conclave of Great Mages. However, now a third force has entered this balance – the Church.

On one hand, the Church’s foundation lies in the magical powers granted to the world by Tenses. These powers are accessible to all who are willing to walk the path of service to the Light. And the first to take this path were neither Mages nor Kanian nobles. They were common warriors, merchants, and even peasants. It was they who first recognized Tenses as sacred, shaped the dogmas of his Church, and became the first vityaz and priests.

The Church’s authority grew so great that in the year 1005, Voisvet Belov, hero of the 957 war against the Hadaganian Empire, became the Namestnik of the Kvatokh – and consequently the head of all Kania. By this time, Voisvet had changed his surname (as is customary upon taking holy vows) to the more resonant “Iron” and had become the head of the Church, attaining the rank of Vityaz of the First Circle.

The Great Mage Aidenus took the place of Skrakan and became the head of the League. Aidenus has never been power-hungry and sees his position more as a heavy duty. It is likely that someone else will soon replace him as the head of the League, and Voisvet Iron is one of the main contenders.

The Kanian aristocracy, mired in intrigues and petty quarrels, simply missed the loss of power. Voisvet became Regent as a result of the first free elections held in Kania – elections that the aristocracy treated with disdain, assuming the victory of a “highborn” candidate was obvious.

Many nobles put forward their candidates for Regent, and it was precisely their large number that played a cruel trick on Kania’s nobility. Perhaps, had there been only one noble candidate, things would have turned out very differently.

A similar situation occurred in Forox, with the difference that Bogsha, a figure of great authority, personally called on the people of Forox to vote for Ivan the Devout—a priest of the Church of Light. Thus, the Regent of the allod was yet another man risen from the lower classes.

Only in Umoir did the aristocrats retain power. Being a descendant of a noble and influential family, and by nature power-loving, Smeyana - who is a Great Mage and the ruler of the allod - could not miss such an opportunity. She ran for office and won.

Thus, Kania is governed by the Council of Namestniks, which includes the Namestnik of Kvathokh, Voisvet Iron (who heads the Council), the Namestnik of Forox, Ivan Ascetic, and the Namestnik of Umoir, Smeyana.

Representing Kania in the Conclave of Great Mages of the League are: Aidenus – Head of the Conclave and Great Mage of Kvatokh, Bogsha – Great Mage of Forox, and Smeyana – Great Mage of Umoir.

At the threshold of the second millennium, Kania is an ancient federative state forced to change significantly in order to survive in this dangerous world. Outdated customs, traditions, and powers are giving way to new ones – first and foremost, the Church of Light, which strives to establish order based on faith.

“Our life is service to the future” – thus Voisvet Iron, Vityaz of the First Circle and Namestnik of Kvatokh, formulated Kania’s goal.
