Black Goo

Preliminary Observations

The Black Goo is an unusual substance first reported in connection with an offshore vault near Whitecap. It does not appear to have been intentionally created, and may be a byproduct of the Scourge. Current understanding is based on limited observation, and several aspects of its nature remain unclear.

Observed Behavior

  • The goo appears to react when exposed to arcane forces and alchemical components.

  • In such cases, the goo seems to amplify instability or change, rather than producing a single, repeatable effect. Reported outcomes have included:

    • The emergence of hostile or aberrant creatures

    • Rapid, aggressive plant growth following spills

    • Heightened responses in locations that were already corrupted or unstable

  • Corrupted plants or creatures have been observed moving toward or attempting to seize goo samples.

  • When left undisturbed, the goo has not been observed to cause noticeable effects on its own.

Containment and Handling (Provisional)

  • The goo appears to persist in soil, stone, water, and organic material.

  • Long-term containment in barrels or similar vessels may be unreliable, as multiple spills have been reported.

  • Exposure to alcohol appears to render the goo inert.

Known Incidents

  • At Whitecap, the goo was deliberately exposed to intense magic, which led to the appearance of hostile creatures. Mira Dell reported that small worms were present in samples of the goo prior to the incident; as a result, some believe the creatures may have resulted from extreme alteration of existing organisms. This has not been conclusively proven.

  • During later transport by sea, at least one container was reportedly lost overboard.

  • A separate spill during overland transport coincided with rapid, aggressive plant growth in Tatterbark Grove.

  • Corruption in Mosswater Vale may have been present prior to known contact with the goo; whether the goo is an ongoing source of the reported incidents there is unclear.

Current Situation

  • One known sample is held by the Aegis Archive under controlled conditions. They have used it to create and provide a detection gem that glows when the goo is nearby.

  • Additional quantities are believed to exist elsewhere, though their locations are unconfirmed.

  • The alchemist Brezug disappeared after beginning analysis of the substance. His notes and a sample are missing.

  • Brezug reportedly theorized that materials found in Myco Valley might help clarify the goo’s properties, but this hypothesis has not yet been tested.

Provisional Assessment

  • The Black Goo does not appear to act with intent or purpose, although existing creatures or corruption appear to have been drawn to it on multiple occasions.

  • Its danger seems to increase when it is moved, exposed to magic, or introduced into already unstable environments.

  • Current conclusions are based on incomplete data, and further study is required.
