Spirit

Effect Trait

Effects with the spirit trait can affect creatures with spiritual essence and might deal spirit damage. A creature with the spirit trait is defined by its spiritual essence; spirit creatures often lack a material form (e.g., ghosts, certain apparitions).

Spirit damage directly affects a creature’s spiritual essence.

  • Spirit damage can harm a target that is projecting its consciousness or possessing another creature, even if the target’s body is somewhere else; the possessed host isn’t harmed by that spirit damage.

  • Spirit damage doesn’t harm creatures with no spirit, such as most constructs (purely mindless machinery, animated statues, etc.).

  • Many spirit‑damage effects also have Devotion traits; these interact with creatures that have devotion traits and with sanctification rules, replacing old “good/evil damage” concepts.

Mechanically, spirit damage is just another damage type—like fire or mental—with the usual interaction pattern: one HP pool, modified by weaknesses, resistances, and immunities. Its special behavior is who it can hurt (things with spirits, including remote or possessing entities) and who it can’t (creatures explicitly listed as lacking a spirit).
