King Kaius ir'Wynarn III

Kaius ir'Wynarn III

"Karrnath survives because it is always prepared to do what others pray will never come." — attributed to Kaius III in closed session of the Warlords' Council

Few rulers in Khorvaire have been publicly accused of being an undead abomination, had the charge disproven under midday sun in front of the assembled warlords of their nation, and then gone on to negotiate the treaty that ended a century-long war. Kaius III managed all three within the span of five years. The people of Karrnath regard him with respect rather than warmth — a necessary ruler, stern and effective, who preserved Karrnath through catastrophe without allowing it to collapse.

Accession and the Warlord Challenge

Kaius came to power in 991 YK, assuming the throne from his aunt Moranna, who had served as regent following the death of his father Jaron in 972 YK. His guardians had kept him sheltered during his youth, and his emergence to claim the crown was all the more striking for his uncanny resemblance to Kaius I — the founder-king who had plunged Karrnath into the Last War and instituted the brutal Code of Kaius.

He inherited a nation in turmoil. The sacking of Narath by Aundair in 989 YK, sustained military setbacks, and the ongoing terrorist campaign of the Order of the Emerald Claw — which Moranna had exposed in 976 YK as servants of Lady Illmarrow, only for the Order to adapt and survive underground — had left Karrnath weakened and divided. The Blood of Vol retained deep roots, with roughly three in ten citizens still identifying as Seekers.

Warlord Drago Thul publicly accused Kaius III of being Kaius I returned as a vampire, asserting that an undead monster was seeking to drain the lifeblood of Karrnath. Under the Code of Galifar, the undead cannot inherit titles or lands — making the charge existential. Kaius met the assembled warlords under midday sun, cut his palm, and let his blood flow freely. The challenge collapsed. Thul fled to Stormreach, where he continues to denounce the king. The tale of the Vampire King has proven surprisingly resilient: some say the king developed enchantments against sunlight; others say changeling impersonators take his place during daylight hours.

The Treaty of Thronehold

Despite Karrnath's martial culture, Kaius was the primary architect of the Treaty of Thronehold, working with Boranel and Keeper Jaela Daran to bring Aurala to the table. The treaty required him to inter Karrnath's reanimated armies in the crypts beneath Atur and formally recognize the independence of the Mror Holds, the Talenta Plains, the Lhazaar Principalities, and Q'barra — all technically Karrnathi territory before the war. To those who believe Karrnath would have won, he gave up their destiny. To those who understood the strategic reality, he preserved a kingdom running out of war to win.

He has since banned the open worship of the Blood of Vol within Korth and treats the Emerald Claw as a terrorist organization. The faith retains deep roots — especially in the Grand Duchy of Atur, a Blood of Vol stronghold under longstanding autonomy agreements — but the direction of the crown is unmistakable.

Marriage and Court

Tradition would have had him marry a ducal heir to bind a region to the throne. Instead, Kaius married Etrigani, an Aereni diplomat — now widely considered a love match, though court observers continue to debate whether the assumption is correct. If Etrigani were to bear an heir, it would cement khoravar support throughout Karrnath.

Governance

Kaius governs from Crownhome, the fortress-palace in Korth's Highcourt ward — a structure that has never been breached in a siege, housing over a thousand soldiers and equipped with siege engines capable of reaching the Karrn River. Archduchess Syele ir'Wynarn, his older cousin through Moranna, manages the Duchy of Korth's administrative functions. His younger brother Gaius is stationed in Thrane as part of a diplomatic exchange of royal family members.

Foreign Relations

Kaius is a staunch monarchist who distrusts Thrane's theocratic governance and would prefer Blood Regent Diani ir'Wynarn elevated to proper monarchical authority. The Valenar elves are the primary antagonist of the moment — High King Shaeras Vadallia denies connection to the "rogue clans" raiding the southern duchies, but courtesy of Etrigani's Aereni connections, Kaius understands the raids are deliberate provocation, and he has ordered his southern warlords to hold tight. He sees Breland as a long-term strategic concern once Boranel's reign ends, and Aereni diplomacy has been astoundingly effective over the past three decades — the extent of his relationship with Aerenal is unknown except to his closest confidants.

The Warlord Problem

Karrnath's eight duchies are each ruled by a warlord who owes direct fealty to the king, but in practice the warlords use all forms of support as leverage for their own political ends. Warlord Renn ir'Tanar of Narath views the treaty as cowardice. The At All Costs faction plots opposition from within the Order of Rekkenmark. And the undead armies interred beneath Atur remain a latent power that any faction with the right necromantic expertise could reactivate — a fact every warlord in Karrnath is quietly aware of.
