Guild of the Black Sky

The Guild of the Black Sky

The Guild of the Black Sky was founded on the ideals of bringing prosperity and peace to our newfound home.

The Guild of the Black Sky has the distinction of being the oldest non-organizer faction in Osterra. Originally called the Black Sky Company, the faction was founded shortly after the first adventurers made their way to Osterra. The Company was founded as mercenaries who used the proceeds of their work in order to cover the costs and work free of charge for those who needed aid but lacked funds.

Leader: Sir Garon Ironrock

Capital: The City of Confluence, Nova Regnus

Founded: May 2018

Alliances: The Wardens

Black Sky’s work drove the flow of coin in Osterra, and they made sure to avoid jobs that would be harmful to the realm. Perhaps one of the most notable examples of the Company’s contributions to the realm was the creation of the Anti-Corruption Potion.

After a year, the Black Sky Company reorganized itself as the Guild of the Black Sky to emphasize a focus on economic development on a large scale. While doing mercenary work pro-bono helped to band-aid the symptoms of economic disparity, the Guild would address the root causes to remedy such depressions.

With the advent of Faction Territories, the Guild of the Black Sky worked with locals to become stewards in this land. Through commerce and diplomacy, the guild would help settlements to grow and economies to flourish. Through skill of arms and negotiation, the guild would defend the lands and the people who trusted us.

The Guild of the Black Sky has followed through on these promises; the lands we lead are self-sufficient, successfully unified lands stretching from the Eastern shores of Nova Regnus all the way to the Western shores, and we often offer aid to others. When the Demons took the Plains of Sorrow, the guild served as a barrier to keep the evil from spreading into Northern Osterra. When factions asked for supplies and support as the refugees from the Demon War flooded in every direction, Black Sky used its resources to help others even as we took on refugees ourselves. The coffers of Black Sky funded the army that defeated Ferdinand, and even now we work with steadfast allies to drive the remnants of the Demons from Osterra. Still, the guild maintains numerous missions for the realm as a whole, simultaneously funding exploratory missions, research projects, and constructions projects.

Leadership:

Operations Chair Sir Garon Ironrock (in charge of military/field operations and security)

Trade Chair High Venture Brennen Farno (in charge of financial matters)

Research Chair, Temporarily Vacant (in charge of arcane, occult, and scientific research)

Steward Riastrad Ulster (Steward of Confluence, in charge of guild logistics and city planning)

The Chairman of Operations has ultimate authority on combat decisions, but he often trusts his officers to complete the objectives he sets as decisions must be made quickly on the battlefield. Outside of combat, the leadership of the Guild of Black Sky turns to democracy whenever there is a decision to be made. Members of the leadership bring issues within their specific spheres of influence to the rest of the guild to vote on, with majority rule deciding the outcome.

Look and Feel:

The Guild of the Black Sky does not have any particular aesthetic requirements; we do provide a belt favor with the Guild’s symbol on it to all members to wear, but there are no hard rules for what character designs we allow. The guild has welcomed dwarven warriors, merchant priests, sneaky rangers, and noble monster hunters, and we are always happy to welcome new adventurers to join us.

What type of players/play style might enjoy this faction:

The Guild of the Black Sky tries to strike a balance between immersion and camaraderie. While we enjoy costuming up, participating in battles and investigating intrigues, there is a reason “drinking with the Chairman” has become a much loved phrase in Osterra. The guild likes the joy that good company brings, and Chairman Ironrock in particular is appreciated for his ability to make sure that people are always included in the revelry at night. Specific playstyles that might thrive in this faction include:

Players who enjoy combat. The Guild of the Black Sky often attempts diplomacy and RP to resolve situations in-game, but we understand that a large appeal of LARP is getting to fight. Even when things are resolved peacefully in-game, the Guild will often suggest “one more fight” and engage in non-story battles for fun.

Characters with a focus on business. Black Sky was originally a group of mercantile mercenaries, and our High Venture worships Pecune, God of Wealth. The guild has a thriving economy, rife for RP. Players who have an interest in Profits would do well in the guild.

Players interested in running their own research. The Guild of the Black Sky currently does not have any high level mages, so someone looking for opportunities to expand their magical character would have plenty of room to flourish.

New players trying to get a feel for the game. For years, the Guild of the Black Sky has had temporary contracts to allow new players to sign on with the guild on an event-by-event basis. This gives new players a chance to have the security of being part of a group while earning coins and loot. Once the contract ends, players are free to sign another temporary contract, sign up full-time, or move to another faction. Our goal is to be a welcoming starter faction for players new to the realm, and if they decide to stay longer we welcome them with open arms.

How is the Roleplay and Combat Focus in the faction:

Roleplay:

The Guild of the Black Sky is fairly open in its approach to roleplay. Some players enjoy getting into the politics, while others try to hang back and relax safely away from the drama. Out of character, our goal is to have fun playing our characters while making sure everyone else is having a good time, too. In character, our goal is to do what we think is best for the realm, though we sometimes take unorthodox approaches in pursuing that goal.

Combat:

Most members of the Guild of the Black Sky participate in combat, but it is not a requirement. We do our best to make sure everyone in our faction understands their class rules and skill mechanics so that there is no confusion on the field. We usually attempt to negotiate before resorting to combat, but diplomacy is often less than successful in Osterra. When the combat starts, we fight hard and we die hard (and we do not blame the healer when we get ourselves killed charging the enemy).
